Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Cooperative Conflict Procedures

Abstract

Cooperative conflict procedures are the established processes and approaches used by cooperative societies to identify, manage, and resolve disagreements among members, leaders, committees, or other groups within the organization. Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire relevant knowledge and develop practical understanding that can improve their participation in cooperative activities. Since unresolved conflicts may affect cooperation, trust, decision-making, and the effective functioning of cooperative societies, knowledge of appropriate conflict procedures is important. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of cooperative conflict procedures. Adult learning can expose participants to cooperative conflict procedures through group discussions, case studies, role-playing, simulations, demonstrations, and problem-solving activities. These approaches can help adults understand procedures such as identifying the source of a dispute, communicating concerns, reporting conflicts through appropriate channels, negotiation, mediation, consultation, and escalation to relevant cooperative authorities. Practical learning activities can also enable participants to examine realistic cooperative disagreements and consider appropriate steps for addressing them. Such experiences may strengthen adults’ knowledge of how conflicts can be managed within cooperative organizations. Adults’ knowledge of cooperative conflict procedures refers to their ability to identify, explain, and understand the appropriate processes for addressing disagreements within cooperative societies. This may include knowledge of communication channels, complaint procedures, negotiation, mediation, consultation, committee involvement, documentation, and other established approaches for resolving cooperative conflicts. Adequate knowledge can help members respond appropriately to disagreements and avoid actions that may unnecessarily escalate disputes. Adult learning is expected to improve this knowledge by providing relevant information and practical opportunities to examine different conflict situations and their appropriate procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults who are members of selected cooperative societies and participants in Adult Education or cooperative learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of cooperative conflict procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of cooperative conflict procedures. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of cooperative conflict procedures. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant learning activities will demonstrate improved understanding of conflict identification, communication channels, complaint procedures, negotiation, mediation, consultation, and appropriate escalation processes. The findings may also indicate that participatory learning methods help adults distinguish between constructive conflict-management procedures and inappropriate responses that may intensify disagreements. Such outcomes would demonstrate the value of adult learning in developing knowledge necessary for constructive management of cooperative conflicts. The study may have useful implications for adult educators, cooperative leaders, facilitators, community development practitioners, and organizations involved in cooperative education. Adult learning programmes can incorporate cooperative conflict procedures into relevant learning activities and use practical methods such as role-playing, case studies, simulations, and group discussions. Facilitators can also present realistic cooperative conflict situations to help participants understand how disputes should be reported, discussed, negotiated, and resolved through appropriate channels. Strengthening adults’ knowledge in this area may promote more constructive responses to disagreements and support effective cooperative relationships. The study is significant because improved knowledge of cooperative conflict procedures can contribute to peaceful interaction, effective communication, member cooperation, and stronger organizational relationships within cooperative societies. It is recommended that Adult Education and cooperative learning programmes provide accessible learning opportunities that explain relevant conflict procedures and appropriate channels for addressing disagreements. Adult educators and cooperative leaders should also employ practical activities that allow members to examine conflict situations and identify suitable responses. The study concludes that adult learning can provide an important educational foundation for improving adults’ knowledge of cooperative conflict procedures and supporting constructive conflict management within cooperative organizations.
