Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Community Resource Mobilization
Abstract
Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge and skills that can strengthen their participation in community development activities. One important area is knowledge of community resource mobilization, which involves understanding how individuals and groups identify, organize, obtain, and effectively utilize resources for addressing community needs. Limited knowledge of resource mobilization processes may reduce adults’ ability to contribute to community initiatives or recognize available sources of support. This study therefore examines the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of community resource mobilization, with the aim of determining whether participation in structured learning activities can improve adults’ understanding of resource mobilization processes. Adult learning can expose participants to community resource mobilization through discussions, workshops, group projects, community meetings, case studies, and practical activities. These learning approaches can help adults understand different forms of community resources, including human skills, local knowledge, materials, financial contributions, institutional support, and community networks. Through participatory learning experiences, adults can examine how community needs are identified, resources are mapped, potential contributors are approached, and available resources are coordinated toward common objectives. Such learning can make resource mobilization concepts more practical and relevant to adults’ community experiences. Knowledge of community resource mobilization involves the ability to identify available resources, recognize potential sources of support, understand resource mobilization strategies, and explain appropriate ways of coordinating resources for community initiatives. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better prepared to identify local capacities, encourage collective contributions, establish useful partnerships, and support community development activities. Adult learning can strengthen this knowledge by providing opportunities for adults to analyse community needs, identify available resources, discuss mobilization strategies, and participate in practical exercises related to community development. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of community resource mobilization. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of community resource mobilization. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of community resource mobilization. It is expected that adults exposed to structured learning activities will demonstrate improved ability to identify community resources, recognize potential sources of support, understand mobilization strategies, and explain appropriate methods of coordinating resources for community initiatives. The findings may also indicate that participatory and practical learning approaches are particularly useful for connecting resource mobilization concepts with real community development needs. The findings may have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, community development facilitators, community leaders, and organizations involved in local development activities. Adult learning programmes can incorporate practical exercises such as community resource mapping, group planning, stakeholder identification, and discussions on local resource opportunities. These activities may help adults develop a clearer understanding of how community resources can be identified and coordinated while encouraging greater participation in collective development efforts. The study will be significant to adults, community leaders, Adult Education practitioners, community development organizations, researchers, and policymakers interested in strengthening community capacity and participation. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes include relevant content on community resource identification, mobilization strategies, stakeholder engagement, and resource coordination. The study concludes that appropriately designed adult learning opportunities can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of community resource mobilization and supporting more informed participation in community development activities.
