Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Basic Burn-Management Procedures

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge that can improve their ability to respond appropriately to common emergencies and safety situations. Basic burn-management procedures refer to the immediate and appropriate steps used to provide initial care for a person who has sustained a burn while ensuring safety and seeking professional medical assistance when necessary. Inadequate knowledge of these procedures may result in inappropriate actions that could worsen the situation or delay appropriate care. This study will examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of basic burn-management procedures. Adult learning can provide participants with opportunities to acquire burn-management knowledge through demonstrations, discussions, visual materials, simulations, practical exercises, and scenario-based learning. These activities can introduce adults to basic burn assessment, immediate safety measures, appropriate cooling procedures, protection of the affected area, and situations requiring professional medical attention. Guided demonstrations can help learners distinguish appropriate first-aid responses from potentially harmful practices. Such practical learning experiences can make burn-management information easier to understand, remember, and apply appropriately. Knowledge of basic burn-management procedures involves understanding the appropriate initial actions to take following a burn and recognizing when further medical attention is necessary. It includes knowledge of immediate safety measures, appropriate first-aid care, protection of the affected area, avoidance of harmful practices, and recognition of circumstances requiring urgent professional assessment. Adequate knowledge can help adults respond more appropriately while professional assistance is being sought. Adult learning may therefore strengthen this knowledge by combining clear explanations with demonstrations, practical examples, and guided emergency scenarios. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, first aid, community safety, and health education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of basic burn-management procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of basic burn-management procedures. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of basic burn-management procedures. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of appropriate immediate responses, basic burn care, safety measures, harmful practices to avoid, and situations that require professional medical attention. The study is also expected to indicate that demonstrations, simulations, and scenario-based activities can improve adults’ ability to recognize and apply appropriate burn-management procedures. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, first aid instructors, community educators, workplace safety trainers, and programme developers. Adult learning programmes should incorporate practical demonstrations and realistic emergency scenarios when providing basic education on burn management. Facilitators should emphasize safe first-aid practices, avoidance of potentially harmful interventions, and the importance of seeking professional medical assistance when burns are severe or require further assessment. The study will be significant to adult learners, community members, workplace participants, educators, and organizations interested in basic emergency preparedness and safety education. It will recommend that adult learning programmes provide accessible and practical instruction on basic burn-management procedures through demonstrations, guided activities, and appropriate scenario-based learning. The study will conclude that appropriately structured adult learning can improve adults’ knowledge of basic burn management and strengthen their preparedness to respond safely and appropriately while professional assistance is being obtained.
