Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Interest in Local History

Abstract

Adult learning refers to the process through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and experiences through formal, non-formal, and informal learning opportunities, while interest in local history refers to the level of curiosity, attention, and willingness adults demonstrate toward learning about the historical events, people, places, traditions, and experiences associated with their local communities. Interest in local history is important because knowledge of the past can help adults understand the development of their communities and appreciate historical resources. However, some adults may show limited interest in learning about local historical events and experiences. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ interest in local history. Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to explore knowledge that relates to their personal experiences, communities, and everyday lives. Through discussions, storytelling, community-based learning, historical materials, field activities, and other learning experiences, adults can be introduced to information about the origins and development of their communities. Adult learning can make local historical knowledge more meaningful by connecting educational activities with familiar places, people, events, traditions, and community experiences. Interest in local history involves adults’ willingness to learn about, explore, discuss, and seek information concerning the historical development of their communities. Adults who demonstrate strong interest may show curiosity about historical events, visit historical sites, listen to local stories, read historical materials, and participate in activities relating to community history. Adult learning may influence such interest by exposing learners to relevant historical information and providing opportunities to explore local history through meaningful educational activities. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adult learners participating in selected adult learning programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult learning and adults’ interest in local history. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ interest in local history. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ interest in local history. Adults with greater exposure to relevant learning experiences are expected to demonstrate increased curiosity about local historical events, places, people, and experiences. The findings may also show that learning activities that connect adults with familiar historical information can encourage greater attention to and interest in the history of their communities. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education teaching and learning. Adult educators can incorporate local historical materials, community stories, historical photographs, oral accounts, and visits to relevant historical sites into appropriate learning activities. Using locally relevant content may make adult learning more meaningful and provide learners with opportunities to connect educational experiences with the history of their immediate environment. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, historians, community organizations, cultural institutions, and policymakers. Adult learners may develop greater interest in learning about the historical development of their communities, while adult educators may gain useful information for designing locally relevant learning activities. Historians and cultural institutions may also benefit from increased public interest in local historical resources and educational programmes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate relevant local historical content into learning activities. Adult educators should use storytelling, historical discussions, community interviews, local records, photographs, and appropriate field visits to stimulate adults’ interest in local history. Cultural institutions and community organizations should also collaborate with adult education providers to make local historical resources accessible for educational purposes. The study concludes that adult learning can contribute to increased interest in local history by providing adults with meaningful opportunities to discover, explore, and understand the historical experiences of their communities.
