Effect of Adult Learning Centres on Adults’ Participation in Book Discussion Activities

Abstract

Adult learning centres are educational facilities that provide adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge, develop skills, and engage in continuous learning, while book discussion activities involve organized conversations in which participants read, interpret, and exchange views about books and other reading materials. Participation in book discussions can improve adults’ reading engagement, communication, critical thinking, and appreciation of different perspectives. However, inadequate access to suitable learning centres and limited opportunities for organized reading activities may reduce adults’ involvement in book discussions. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of adult learning centres on adults’ participation in book discussion activities. Adult learning centres provide structured environments where adults can access learning materials, interact with other learners, receive guidance from facilitators, and participate in educational activities. The availability of reading materials, conducive learning spaces, qualified facilitators, appropriate schedules, and organized learning activities can create opportunities for adults to engage in reading-related programmes. Through these facilities and services, adult learning centres can encourage regular interaction with books and provide suitable settings for group-based reading activities. Adults’ participation in book discussion activities refers to their involvement in reading groups, book clubs, guided discussions, literary conversations, and other organized activities centred on books or reading materials. Regular participation can provide opportunities for adults to express ideas, listen to alternative viewpoints, explain their interpretations, and develop confidence in discussing written materials. Adult learning centres may influence such participation by providing appropriate spaces, organizing discussion sessions, making reading materials available, and connecting learners with other individuals who share similar learning interests. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will consist of adult learners attending selected adult learning centres in the study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on the availability and usefulness of adult learning centres and adults’ participation in book discussion activities. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning centres on participation in book discussion activities. The study is expected to establish that adult learning centres have a significant effect on adults’ participation in book discussion activities. Adults who have access to well-organized learning centres are expected to demonstrate greater involvement in reading groups, book discussions, and related literary activities. The findings may also show that access to reading materials, conducive learning environments, facilitator support, and organized discussion opportunities encourages adults to participate more actively in book-related learning activities. The findings will have implications for adult education by emphasizing the role of learning centres in creating opportunities for reading-based social and educational learning. Adult educators can use learning centres to organize regular book discussions, reading circles, guided literary conversations, and collaborative interpretation activities. Such activities can make reading more engaging while providing adults with opportunities to develop communication, critical thinking, comprehension, and reflective learning skills. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, managers of adult learning centres, community education providers, literacy programme coordinators, and educational policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from increased opportunities to interact with reading materials and other learners, while educators may gain useful information for planning effective reading-related activities. Managers and policymakers may also use the findings to improve the provision of learning resources and facilities that encourage adults’ participation in organized reading activities. The study will recommend that adult learning centres should provide adequate reading materials, comfortable discussion spaces, and regular opportunities for adults to participate in book discussion activities. Adult educators should organize book clubs, reading circles, and guided discussions based on learners’ interests and educational needs. Learning centres should also encourage collaborative reading activities that promote active participation and exchange of ideas. The study concludes that accessible and well-organized adult learning centres can provide an important foundation for increasing adults’ participation in book discussion activities.
