Effect of Adult Learners’ Perception of Learning Centres on Their Participation in Adult Education Programmes
Abstract
Adult learners’ perception of learning centres refers to their views, beliefs, and attitudes regarding the suitability, usefulness, accessibility, and learning environment provided by such centres. Participation in adult education programmes refers to the extent to which adults enrol in, attend, engage in, and remain involved in organised learning activities. A favourable perception of learning centres may encourage adults to participate more actively, while negative perceptions may discourage enrolment and continued involvement. This study will examine the effect of adult learners’ perception of learning centres on their participation in adult education programmes, with the purpose of determining whether learners’ perceptions influence their level of participation. Adult learners’ perception of learning centres may be shaped by the quality of learning facilities, accessibility of the centre, availability of learning materials, competence of facilitators, learning atmosphere, and relevance of programmes offered. When adults perceive a learning centre as welcoming, supportive, accessible, and suitable for their educational needs, they may develop more positive attitudes toward learning. Such perceptions can influence their willingness to enrol in programmes, attend learning sessions regularly, and remain committed to their educational activities. Participation in adult education programmes involves adults’ enrolment, attendance, engagement in learning activities, and continued involvement in organised educational programmes. Learners’ perceptions of learning centres can affect participation by influencing their attitudes toward the learning environment and their expectations about the benefits of attending the centre. Positive perceptions may increase learners’ willingness to attend classes and engage in learning activities, whereas unfavourable perceptions may reduce their interest and commitment to programme participation. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education centres. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure adult learners’ perception of learning centres and their participation in adult education programmes. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult learners’ perception of learning centres has a significant positive effect on their participation in adult education programmes. It is expected that learners who have more favourable perceptions of their learning centres will demonstrate higher levels of attendance, engagement, and continued participation. The study may also establish that factors such as accessibility, learning facilities, instructional support, and the general learning environment contribute to adults’ perceptions and willingness to participate. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education. Adult education providers may need to pay greater attention to the physical and instructional conditions of learning centres and how these conditions are perceived by learners. Adult educators and programme administrators may also need to create welcoming learning environments, provide appropriate learning resources, and maintain supportive relationships with learners to encourage sustained participation. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, learning centre administrators, adult education providers, educational planners, and community education organisations. Adult learners may benefit from improved learning environments that encourage continued participation, while educators and administrators may gain useful information about factors that shape learners’ perceptions. Educational planners may also use the findings when developing policies and strategies for improving adult education centres. The study will recommend that adult education providers should improve the accessibility, learning facilities, instructional resources, and general environment of learning centres to promote favourable perceptions among adult learners. Educators should maintain supportive relationships with learners and respond to their educational needs, while administrators should regularly assess learners’ views of the learning environment. The study will conclude that positive perceptions of learning centres can contribute significantly to increased participation in adult education programmes.
