Effect of Adult Health Education on Knowledge of Emergency First Aid Practices

Abstract

Adult health education refers to organized educational activities that provide adults with knowledge and skills for maintaining and improving their health, while knowledge of emergency first aid practices refers to adults’ understanding of the appropriate immediate actions taken to assist a person who is injured or suddenly ill before professional medical care is available. Adequate knowledge of first aid is important because appropriate early responses can help reduce complications and improve the chances of a favourable outcome during emergencies. However, limited knowledge may cause adults to respond incorrectly or delay appropriate assistance. This study will examine the effect of adult health education on knowledge of emergency first aid practices. Adult health education programmes may provide instruction on basic first aid principles, recognition of common emergencies, bleeding control, treatment of minor burns, management of fainting, choking response, and appropriate actions following injuries. Learning may be delivered through discussions, demonstrations, practical exercises, illustrations, and guided simulations. These approaches can help adults understand appropriate emergency responses and develop greater confidence in applying first aid knowledge when necessary. Knowledge of emergency first aid practices involves understanding what actions should be taken, what actions should be avoided, and when professional medical assistance should be sought. Adults with adequate first aid knowledge are better positioned to recognize emergency situations and respond appropriately while awaiting professional care. Adult health education can therefore serve as an important avenue for improving adults’ understanding of basic emergency response procedures and promoting safer responses to common emergencies. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education and community health education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ exposure to adult health education and their knowledge of emergency first aid practices. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult health education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of emergency first aid practices. It is expected that adults who receive relevant health education will demonstrate better knowledge of appropriate responses to common emergencies, including injuries, bleeding, burns, choking, and sudden illness, compared with adults with limited exposure to such education. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in Adult Education by demonstrating the value of practical and experience-based health education. Adult educators can incorporate first aid demonstrations, emergency-response scenarios, practical exercises, and simple instructional materials into adult health education programmes. Such methods can make learning more meaningful and help adults connect classroom knowledge with situations they may encounter in everyday life. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community health educators, healthcare practitioners, community organizations, and providers of adult education programmes. Adult learners may benefit from improved knowledge of appropriate first aid practices, while educators may gain useful information for designing relevant health education activities. Community organizations and healthcare providers may also use the findings to strengthen community-based health education and emergency preparedness initiatives. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate basic emergency first aid education into relevant health education activities. Adult educators should use practical demonstrations, participatory learning, illustrations, and simulated emergency situations to improve adults’ understanding of first aid procedures. Collaboration between adult education providers and healthcare professionals should also be encouraged when developing first aid learning materials. The study concludes that effective adult health education can contribute to improved knowledge of emergency first aid practices among adults.
