Effect of Adult Education Programmes on the Social Inclusion of Older Adults
Abstract
Adult education programmes are organized learning opportunities designed to provide adults with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and opportunities for continued personal and social development, while social inclusion refers to the extent to which older adults are accepted, involved, supported, and able to participate meaningfully in family and community life. Social exclusion among older adults may result from isolation, limited opportunities for interaction, declining social networks, and reduced involvement in community activities. This study will examine the effect of adult education programmes on the social inclusion of older adults. Adult education programmes can provide older adults with opportunities to learn, interact, communicate, and develop new interests within supportive learning environments. Programmes such as literacy classes, community learning activities, continuing education, skills development, and discussion-based learning can encourage regular interaction among participants. Through these programmes, older adults may develop confidence, communication abilities, social connections, and a greater sense of belonging. Social inclusion of older adults involves their ability to maintain social relationships, interact with others, participate in group activities, access social opportunities, and feel accepted within their communities. Participation in adult education programmes can create opportunities for older adults to meet other people, exchange experiences, develop friendships, and remain connected to community life. Regular educational engagement may therefore reduce social isolation and strengthen the social inclusion of older adults. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise older adults participating in selected adult education programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in adult education programmes and the social inclusion of older adults. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education programmes has a significant positive effect on the social inclusion of older adults. It is expected that older adults who participate regularly in educational programmes will demonstrate stronger social relationships, greater interaction with others, increased involvement in group activities, and a stronger sense of belonging. The study may also establish that supportive learning environments provide valuable opportunities for older adults to remain socially connected. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning approaches used in adult education programmes for older adults. Adult educators may adopt interactive teaching methods, group discussions, collaborative activities, peer learning, and practical learning experiences that encourage communication and social interaction. Such approaches can make learning more inclusive while providing older adults with meaningful opportunities to interact with their peers. The study will be beneficial to older adults, adult educators, community organizations, adult education providers, social development agencies, and policymakers. Older adults may benefit from increased opportunities for learning and social interaction, while adult educators may gain useful information for designing programmes that address the social needs of older learners. Organizations responsible for older-adult development may also use the findings to strengthen educational initiatives that promote inclusion and reduce social isolation. The study will recommend that adult education providers develop accessible and age-appropriate programmes that encourage interaction and active involvement among older adults. Adult educators should incorporate collaborative learning, group discussions, social learning activities, and community-based educational programmes into their practice. Relevant organizations should provide supportive learning environments and encourage older adults to participate regularly in educational activities. In conclusion, well-designed adult education programmes can provide important opportunities for older adults to strengthen social relationships, remain connected to others, and experience greater social inclusion.
