Effect of Adult Education on Participation in Community Care Activities

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities designed to improve adults’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, and capacity to respond effectively to personal and community needs, while participation in community care activities refers to adults’ involvement in activities aimed at providing assistance, attention, and support to people within their communities. Community care activities may include assisting older persons, supporting vulnerable individuals, caring for community facilities, providing practical assistance to families, and participating in organized welfare activities. However, limited knowledge, awareness, and practical skills may affect adults’ ability and willingness to participate in community care activities. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of adult education on participation in community care activities. Adult education can provide adults with knowledge and skills related to cooperation, communication, caregiving, social responsibility, problem-solving, and community support. Through literacy classes, skills training, community workshops, group discussions, practical demonstrations, and other educational activities, adults can develop competencies that may be useful when providing care and assistance within their communities. These learning experiences can also improve adults’ understanding of community needs and appropriate ways of responding to them. Participation in community care activities involves adults contributing their time, skills, knowledge, or other resources to support individuals and groups within their communities. Such activities may include assisting older community members, supporting persons experiencing difficulties, helping families during challenging situations, maintaining communal care facilities, and participating in organized welfare services. Adult education may influence participation by improving adults’ knowledge of care practices, communication abilities, confidence, and understanding of their responsibilities toward people who require support. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and participation in community care activities. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on participation in community care activities. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to adult education will demonstrate better knowledge of community care practices, stronger confidence in providing appropriate assistance, and greater willingness to participate in organized community care activities. The findings will have implications for adult education teaching and learning by demonstrating the importance of incorporating practical care-related knowledge into community-based learning programmes. Adult educators may use practical demonstrations, case studies, group discussions, role-playing activities, and community-based projects to develop learners’ understanding of appropriate care and support practices. These approaches can enable adults to apply acquired knowledge to practical community situations. The study will be significant to adult educators, adult learners, community leaders, community care organizations, social welfare practitioners, policymakers, and researchers. Adult educators may use the findings to design learning programmes that develop practical knowledge for community care, while community organizations may benefit from improved understanding of how education can strengthen adults’ capacity to provide appropriate support. Policymakers and social welfare practitioners may also use the findings to strengthen community-based care initiatives. The study will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate relevant learning activities on caregiving, social responsibility, communication, and community support. Adult educators should provide practical learning opportunities that enable participants to develop appropriate skills for supporting people within their communities. Community organizations and care providers should also collaborate with adult education providers to create suitable opportunities for adults to apply their knowledge and skills. The study will conclude that effective adult education can strengthen adults’ knowledge, confidence, and willingness to participate in community care activities.
