Effect of Adult Education on Parents’ Participation in Children’s Career Guidance

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities that provide adults with knowledge, skills, and competencies for improving their personal, family, and social responsibilities, while children’s career guidance involves the provision of information, advice, encouragement, and support that helps children understand educational and occupational options. Parents can play an important role in helping children explore career interests and make informed educational choices. However, limited knowledge about career pathways and changing employment opportunities may restrict parents’ ability to provide appropriate guidance. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on parents’ participation in children’s career guidance. Adult education programmes may include literacy education, continuing education, vocational learning, skills development, workshops, and other structured learning opportunities. Through these programmes, parents can develop communication, information-use, decision-making, and problem-solving skills that may improve their ability to understand educational and occupational information. Adult education can also expose parents to new knowledge about changing career opportunities and the skills required for different occupations. Parents’ participation in children’s career guidance involves discussing career interests with children, providing information about educational pathways, encouraging exploration of occupational options, helping children identify suitable learning opportunities, and supporting career-related decisions. Effective parental participation can provide children with guidance and encouragement during the process of exploring future educational and occupational possibilities. Adult education may therefore influence such participation by increasing parents’ knowledge, confidence, and ability to engage in meaningful career-related discussions with their children. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise parents of school-age children in selected communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and parents’ participation in children’s career guidance. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on parents’ participation in children’s career guidance. Parents with greater exposure to adult education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of educational and occupational information and greater confidence in discussing career options with their children. The study may further establish that adult education can strengthen parents’ ability to provide informed guidance and encourage children to explore appropriate career pathways. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning because informed parental guidance can complement the career-related support provided by schools. Children may benefit when parents are able to discuss educational requirements, career interests, and future opportunities more effectively. Teachers and school counsellors may also find it easier to work with parents who possess adequate knowledge and understanding of career development issues. The study will be beneficial to parents, children, teachers, school counsellors, adult education practitioners, education planners, and researchers. Parents may gain greater capacity to support their children’s career exploration, while children may benefit from better-informed guidance at home. Adult education practitioners and education planners may use the findings to incorporate relevant career information into programmes designed for parents. The study will recommend that adult education programmes include practical information on educational pathways, occupational opportunities, career exploration, and effective ways of supporting children’s career decisions. Schools should also encourage communication between parents and career guidance personnel to ensure that children receive consistent support at home and in school. It is concluded that adult education can strengthen parents’ knowledge and capacity to participate effectively in their children’s career guidance.
