Effect of Adult Education on Environmental Awareness among Community Adults

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities designed to provide adults with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies for personal, social, economic, and community development, while environmental awareness refers to individuals’ understanding of environmental issues, their causes, consequences, and the importance of protecting and conserving the environment. Environmental awareness is important because adults need adequate knowledge to recognize environmental problems and adopt responsible practices within their communities. However, inadequate knowledge of environmental issues may limit adults’ ability to understand and respond appropriately to environmental challenges. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of adult education on environmental awareness among community adults. Adult education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge through literacy classes, workshops, seminars, discussions, demonstrations, and community-based learning activities. Environmental issues can be incorporated into adult education through lessons on pollution, sanitation, waste management, environmental conservation, climate-related concerns, natural resource protection, and sustainable living. These learning experiences can help adults understand environmental problems and develop relevant knowledge for identifying and addressing environmental challenges within their communities. Environmental awareness involves knowledge and understanding of environmental conditions, pollution, waste generation, conservation, resource use, and human activities that affect the environment. Adults with adequate environmental awareness may be better able to recognize harmful environmental practices, understand their consequences, and appreciate the importance of protecting natural and community resources. Adult education can therefore provide the learning opportunities required to improve adults’ understanding of environmental issues and encourage responsible environmental attitudes. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise community adults participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and an environmental knowledge assessment designed to measure exposure to adult education and environmental awareness. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a significant positive effect on environmental awareness among community adults. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to adult education will demonstrate higher levels of knowledge and awareness concerning environmental issues. The study may also establish that adult education improves adults’ understanding of environmental problems, conservation practices, pollution prevention, and responsible use of environmental resources. The findings will have implications for adult education teaching and learning by emphasizing the importance of incorporating environmental issues into adult education programmes. Adult education facilitators may use practical demonstrations, environmental discussions, community projects, case studies, and field-based learning activities to improve learners’ understanding of environmental problems. Such approaches can make environmental learning more practical and relevant to adults’ everyday experiences. The study will be significant to community adults, adult education facilitators, community leaders, environmental educators, environmental organizations, local authorities, and policymakers. Community adults may benefit from improved understanding of environmental issues, while facilitators may gain useful information for strengthening environmental content in adult education programmes. Community leaders and environmental organizations may also use the findings to support educational initiatives aimed at improving environmental awareness within communities. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should incorporate relevant environmental topics such as pollution, waste management, sanitation, conservation, climate-related concerns, and sustainable resource use. Adult education providers should use practical and community-based learning approaches to strengthen adults’ environmental knowledge. Environmental organizations and community authorities should also collaborate with adult education providers to promote continuous environmental awareness programmes. The study concludes that effective adult education can contribute to improved environmental awareness among community adults.
