Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Use of Public Libraries

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies for personal, educational, and social development, while the use of public libraries refers to the extent to which adults access and utilize library facilities, resources, and services for reading, information seeking, self-directed learning, and educational purposes. Public libraries provide valuable opportunities for adults to obtain books, reference materials, digital resources, and other learning materials. However, limited knowledge of available library resources and inadequate learning skills may affect adults’ effective use of public libraries. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ use of public libraries. Adult education programmes may include literacy classes, continuing education, community learning, skills development, workshops, and other structured learning opportunities. These programmes can develop adults’ reading, information-use, communication, and independent learning skills. Through participation in adult education, learners may become more familiar with different sources of information and develop greater confidence in seeking educational materials for personal and academic purposes. Adults’ use of public libraries involves visiting library facilities, borrowing books, reading library materials, consulting reference resources, accessing digital information, and using other services provided by public libraries. Regular library use can provide adults with opportunities for independent learning, information acquisition, and personal development. Adult education may therefore influence library use by developing the skills, confidence, and awareness required for adults to identify and utilize available library resources effectively. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners in selected communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and adults’ use of public libraries. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ use of public libraries. Adults with greater exposure to adult education are expected to demonstrate greater awareness of library resources and more frequent use of public library facilities and services. The study may further establish that improved literacy, information-use, and independent learning skills can encourage adults to make greater use of public libraries for educational and personal development. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning because public libraries can complement formal and non-formal learning by providing adults with additional educational resources. Adult educators can encourage learners to use library materials for reading, independent study, information seeking, and continued learning. Greater use of public libraries may therefore provide adult learners with additional opportunities to strengthen knowledge and develop independent learning habits. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult education practitioners, public librarians, community leaders, education planners, library administrators, and researchers. Adults may gain improved awareness and use of library resources, while librarians may gain information useful for developing services that respond to adult learners’ educational needs. Adult education practitioners and education planners may also use the findings to strengthen cooperation between adult education programmes and public library services. The study will recommend that adult education programmes include practical orientation on the location, selection, and use of public library resources and services. Public libraries should also provide accessible learning support and outreach activities that encourage adults to use available educational materials. It is concluded that effective adult education can improve adults’ knowledge, confidence, and ability to make meaningful use of public libraries.
