Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Traditional Conflict-Resolution Practices
Abstract
Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge that can improve their understanding of social relationships, community practices, and constructive approaches to resolving disagreements. Traditional conflict-resolution practices refer to locally developed methods, procedures, values, and customs used by communities to manage disputes, restore relationships, and promote peaceful coexistence. Limited understanding of these practices may reduce adults’ ability to recognize their relevance and may contribute to the neglect of useful community-based approaches to conflict resolution. The study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of traditional conflict-resolution practices. Adult education can expose learners to traditional conflict-resolution practices through community-based learning, storytelling, discussions, case studies, oral history, practical demonstrations, and interaction with experienced community members. These learning experiences can introduce adults to locally recognized approaches such as dialogue, reconciliation, mediation by respected community members, restorative practices, and other culturally established methods of addressing disputes. Through structured learning, adults can examine the principles, procedures, values, and circumstances associated with traditional approaches to conflict resolution. Understanding traditional conflict-resolution practices involves knowledge of their purposes, processes, participants, values, and appropriate areas of application. Adults with adequate understanding may be better able to recognize how traditional approaches can contribute to dispute settlement, relationship restoration, and peaceful coexistence within communities. Adult education can strengthen this understanding by providing opportunities for learners to examine traditional practices systematically, compare different approaches, and consider their relevance and limitations in contemporary social settings. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure adults’ exposure to adult education and their understanding of traditional conflict-resolution practices. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Descriptive statistics will be used to answer the research questions, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of traditional conflict-resolution practices. Adults exposed to relevant educational experiences are expected to demonstrate greater knowledge of the purposes, procedures, values, and appropriate applications of traditional approaches to resolving disputes. The study is also expected to indicate that adult education can help learners recognize the relevance of locally developed conflict-resolution knowledge while encouraging critical consideration of practices that may require adaptation to contemporary standards. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education by emphasizing the value of culturally relevant learning content. Adult educators may use storytelling, oral history, case studies, community interviews, role-playing, and discussions to expose learners to traditional conflict-resolution practices. These approaches can enable adults to connect classroom learning with community knowledge and examine how traditional approaches have been used to address disagreements and restore relationships. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community elders and knowledge holders, community organizations, and adult education programme planners. Adult learners may develop better knowledge of traditional approaches to resolving disagreements, while adult educators may gain useful information for incorporating relevant community knowledge into learning activities. Community knowledge holders may benefit from opportunities to communicate valuable knowledge to adult learners, while programme planners may use the findings to develop culturally relevant adult education programmes that appropriately examine traditional approaches to conflict resolution. The study recommends that adult education programmes should provide appropriate opportunities for adults to learn about traditional conflict-resolution practices through community-based and participatory learning methods. Adult educators should collaborate with knowledgeable community members and encourage learners to examine the strengths, limitations, and contemporary relevance of traditional practices. Learning activities should promote critical understanding rather than assume that every traditional practice is appropriate in all circumstances. It is concluded that adult education can serve as an important avenue for improving adults’ understanding of traditional conflict-resolution practices and strengthening informed engagement with valuable community-based knowledge.
