Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of the Gig Economy
Abstract
The gig economy refers to a labour market system in which individuals undertake temporary, flexible, freelance, or task-based work, often through digital platforms or direct arrangements with clients. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge about emerging employment structures and understand how changing labour-market arrangements operate. As flexible and non-traditional forms of work continue to provide alternative opportunities for earning income and developing occupational skills, understanding the gig economy has become increasingly relevant to adults. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of the gig economy. Adult Education can expose learners to important concepts associated with the gig economy, including freelance work, short-term contracts, task-based employment, platform-mediated work, independent contracting, flexible work arrangements, and client-based services. Through structured learning activities, adults can examine how gig workers identify opportunities, communicate with clients, negotiate tasks, deliver services, and manage work responsibilities. Such education can also help learners understand the opportunities and challenges associated with participating in gig-economy activities. Adults’ understanding of the gig economy involves their ability to explain its meaning, characteristics, forms, opportunities, and operational features. Adults with relevant knowledge may be better positioned to distinguish gig work from conventional long-term employment and recognise different types of flexible work arrangements. Improved understanding can also help adults identify suitable gig opportunities, appreciate the responsibilities associated with independent work, and consider issues such as income uncertainty, client relationships, work flexibility, and digital-platform requirements. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of the gig economy. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of the gig economy. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of the gig economy. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved knowledge of freelance work, task-based employment, independent contracting, digital-platform work, and flexible employment arrangements. The study may also reveal that practical learning experiences strengthen adults’ ability to recognise gig-economy opportunities and understand the responsibilities and challenges associated with participating in this form of work. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners and programme developers. Incorporating gig-economy concepts into adult learning programmes can provide opportunities for learners to examine practical examples of freelance services, platform-based work, client engagement, flexible employment, and independent contracting. Such activities may strengthen adults’ understanding of emerging labour-market arrangements and help them make more informed decisions about alternative employment and income-generating opportunities. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, employment-support organisations, digital-platform users, businesses, and policymakers interested in changing patterns of work. It is recommended that adult education programmes should incorporate practical learning activities on gig-economy concepts, freelance work, digital platforms, client management, independent contracting, flexible work arrangements, and responsible participation. The study concludes that effective Adult Education can improve adults’ understanding of the gig economy and support informed engagement with emerging forms of flexible and task-based work.
