Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Safe Drinking-Water Practices

Abstract

Safe drinking-water practices refer to the knowledge and behaviours involved in obtaining, treating, storing, and handling water in ways that reduce contamination and protect health. Adult education can provide adults with practical knowledge about water safety and help them understand the consequences of unsafe water practices. However, inadequate knowledge of safe drinking-water practices may increase exposure to contaminated water and related health risks. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of safe drinking-water practices. Adult education can address safe drinking-water practices through health education sessions, demonstrations, discussions, practical activities, and community-based learning. Such educational activities may explain appropriate water sources, household water treatment methods, safe collection procedures, hygienic handling, and proper storage. Adult learners can also be encouraged to identify unsafe practices within their households and communities and develop practical ways of preventing contamination. Understanding safe drinking-water practices involves knowing how water can become contaminated and the measures that can be taken to maintain its safety from collection to consumption. Adults who receive relevant education may be better able to recognize unsafe water sources, understand the importance of treating drinking water when necessary, and apply appropriate storage and handling practices. Adult education can therefore serve as an important means of improving adults’ understanding of practical water-safety measures. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners in the study area, from whom a representative sample will be drawn using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and understanding of safe drinking-water practices. The instrument will be validated by experts, while reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of safe drinking-water practices. It is expected that adults who have greater exposure to relevant educational activities will demonstrate better knowledge of water collection, treatment, storage, handling, and contamination prevention. The findings may also indicate that practical and participatory approaches to adult education are useful for strengthening understanding of everyday water-safety practices. The study may have implications for the teaching and learning of health-related subjects within adult education programmes. Adult educators may need to incorporate practical demonstrations, locally relevant examples, group discussions, and problem-solving activities when teaching drinking-water safety. Such approaches can make learning more understandable and encourage adults to connect educational knowledge with their everyday household practices. The findings may benefit adult learners, adult educators, community health educators, households, community development organisations, and public health practitioners. Adult learners may gain improved understanding of measures for protecting drinking water, while educators may obtain useful information for designing relevant health education programmes. Communities may also benefit from increased awareness of practices that can reduce contamination of drinking water and promote healthier household environments. The study recommends that adult education programmes should include practical and accessible lessons on safe drinking-water practices. Adult educators should use demonstrations and community-based activities to reinforce learning, while relevant organisations should support regular water-safety education within adult learning programmes. The study concludes that adult education can contribute meaningfully to improving adults’ understanding of safe drinking-water practices when learning activities are practical, relevant, and connected to everyday experiences.
