Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Renewable Energy Options

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning activities designed to provide adults with relevant knowledge, skills, and competencies, while understanding of renewable energy options refers to adults’ knowledge of available energy sources that are naturally replenished and their characteristics, applications, benefits, and limitations. Understanding renewable energy options is important because informed knowledge can help adults make appropriate decisions about energy use and appreciate alternatives to conventional energy sources. However, limited knowledge of renewable energy options may restrict adults’ ability to make informed energy choices. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of renewable energy options. Adult education can expose adults to information about different renewable energy sources, including solar, wind, hydropower, biomass, and other appropriate alternatives. Through discussions, demonstrations, visual materials, practical activities, and community-based learning, adults can learn about how renewable energy sources are generated, where they can be applied, and the benefits and limitations associated with their use. Such educational activities can also help learners distinguish renewable energy sources from non-renewable sources and develop a broader understanding of sustainable energy practices. Understanding renewable energy options involves knowledge of different renewable sources, their basic characteristics, potential applications, environmental implications, advantages, limitations, and factors that influence their suitability for particular uses. Adults who receive relevant educational instruction may develop clearer knowledge of available renewable energy options and their practical applications. The study will therefore investigate whether adult education contributes to improved understanding of renewable energy options among adults. The study will adopt an appropriate research design, such as a descriptive survey or quasi-experimental design, depending on the study setting. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire or knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ understanding of renewable energy options. The data obtained will be analysed using suitable descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that exposure to adult education improves adults’ understanding of renewable energy options. Adults who receive relevant instruction are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of different renewable energy sources, their applications, benefits, limitations, and suitability for various energy needs. These expected findings would emphasize the importance of adult education in developing informed understanding of alternative energy resources. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of environmental and energy-related subjects within adult education programmes. Adult educators can incorporate practical demonstrations, visual materials, group discussions, case examples, and community-based learning activities into renewable-energy lessons. These approaches can help learners connect theoretical information with real-life energy choices and develop a clearer understanding of available renewable energy alternatives. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, households, community organizations, environmental educators, energy stakeholders, and policymakers. Adults may gain improved knowledge for making informed decisions concerning renewable energy, while educators may obtain useful information for developing effective energy-education programmes. Community organizations and other stakeholders may also use the findings to strengthen public awareness and educational initiatives concerning renewable energy options. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate accessible and practical education on renewable energy options, covering their characteristics, applications, benefits, limitations, and appropriate uses. Demonstrations, visual materials, discussions, and practical learning activities should be used to strengthen understanding. Community-based energy education should also be encouraged to improve adults’ awareness of available alternatives. The study concludes that effective adult education can improve adults’ understanding of renewable energy options and support more informed consideration of sustainable energy alternatives.
