Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Nonviolent Communication

Abstract

Adult education serves as an important avenue for equipping adults with knowledge and skills that can improve their interpersonal relationships and everyday interactions. Nonviolent communication refers to a communication approach that emphasizes observation without judgment, expression of feelings and needs, empathy, and respectful requests rather than blame, criticism, or hostility. Inadequate understanding of nonviolent communication may contribute to misunderstanding, strained relationships, verbal confrontation, and difficulty resolving disagreements constructively. The study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of nonviolent communication. Adult education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge through structured learning, group discussions, practical activities, and other forms of learner-centred instruction. Through relevant learning experiences, adults can be introduced to the principles of nonviolent communication, including careful observation of situations, identification and expression of feelings, recognition of personal needs, empathetic listening, and respectful expression of requests. Adult learning activities can also encourage learners to reflect on their existing communication patterns and understand how different approaches may influence interpersonal interactions. Understanding nonviolent communication involves recognizing the difference between judgmental and non-judgmental expressions, understanding the relationship between feelings and needs, listening with empathy, and expressing concerns without unnecessary blame or aggression. Adults who understand these principles may be better prepared to communicate their concerns respectfully and respond to the feelings and needs of others. Adult education can contribute to this understanding by exposing learners to practical communication situations and providing opportunities to examine and apply nonviolent communication principles. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure adults’ exposure to adult education and their understanding of nonviolent communication. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Descriptive statistics will be used to answer the research questions, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of nonviolent communication. Adults who receive relevant educational exposure are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of expressing feelings and needs appropriately, listening empathetically, avoiding judgmental language, and making respectful requests. The study is also expected to show that learning experiences that address communication principles can improve adults’ ability to recognize communication patterns that may create tension and replace them with more constructive approaches. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education by emphasizing the importance of interpersonal communication content within adult learning programmes. Adult educators may incorporate role-playing, case studies, group discussions, communication exercises, and reflective activities to help learners understand and practise nonviolent communication principles. Such teaching approaches can provide adults with practical opportunities to examine communication challenges and develop a clearer understanding of respectful and empathetic interaction. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, families, community organizations, workplaces, and adult education programme planners. Adult learners may benefit from improved understanding of communication approaches that promote empathy and respectful interaction. Adult educators may use the findings to develop learning activities that address communication challenges, while programme planners and organizations may gain useful information for strengthening adult education programmes that promote constructive interpersonal relationships. The study may also contribute to knowledge on the role of adult education in improving adults’ communication understanding. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate appropriate nonviolent communication concepts into relevant learning activities. Adult educators should use practical and participatory teaching methods that enable learners to identify feelings and needs, practise empathetic listening, and express concerns respectfully. Learning materials should include realistic communication situations that allow adults to apply nonviolent communication principles in everyday interactions. It is concluded that adult education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ understanding of nonviolent communication and promoting more respectful, empathetic, and constructive interpersonal communication.
