Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Intergenerational Responsibility

Abstract

Adult Education can play an important role in helping adults understand their responsibilities toward people from different generations. Intergenerational responsibility refers to the awareness and understanding of obligations that individuals have toward people of other generations, including the sharing of knowledge and experiences, preservation of valuable values and practices, mutual support, respect, and consideration of the needs of both present and future generations. However, differences in age, experiences, interests, and social expectations may sometimes limit adults’ understanding of their responsibilities across generations. This study will examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of intergenerational responsibility, with the purpose of determining whether Adult Education can improve adults’ knowledge of their responsibilities in maintaining positive relationships and mutual support between generations. Adult Education can introduce adults to important principles associated with intergenerational responsibility through structured learning experiences. These may include mutual respect, knowledge transfer, mentorship, preservation of cultural and social knowledge, care for other generations, shared responsibility, and consideration of long-term community interests. Through discussions, storytelling, case studies, collaborative activities, and intergenerational learning exercises, adults can explore how responsibilities can be shared between younger, middle-aged, and older members of society. Such educational experiences can help participants recognize that each generation possesses valuable knowledge and experiences and that responsible relationships require both giving and receiving support. Understanding intergenerational responsibility is important because positive relationships between generations can contribute to knowledge continuity, social cohesion, mutual support, and community development. Adults who understand their intergenerational responsibilities may be better able to appreciate the experiences of other age groups, share useful knowledge, support learning across generations, and contribute to the preservation of valuable practices and experiences. Adult Education may strengthen this understanding by creating opportunities for adults to examine the roles that different generations play within families, communities, workplaces, and other social settings. Improved understanding can therefore encourage adults to recognize their responsibilities toward both present and future generations. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of intergenerational responsibility. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of intergenerational responsibility. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of intergenerational responsibility. Adults who receive relevant educational exposure may demonstrate improved knowledge of mutual support, knowledge sharing, mentorship, respect for other generations, preservation of valuable experiences, and responsibilities toward future generations. The study is also expected to indicate that participatory and intergenerational learning experiences can help adults understand the importance of maintaining constructive relationships across age groups and recognizing the contributions and needs of different generations. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community learning facilitators, families, and organizations involved in intergenerational programmes. Incorporating intergenerational responsibility into adult learning can provide participants with opportunities to examine relationships between generations and understand their responsibilities within those relationships. Activities such as intergenerational discussions, storytelling, mentoring exercises, collaborative projects, and reflective learning can make the subject more practical and encourage adults to connect educational concepts with everyday experiences. These approaches may strengthen adults’ appreciation of mutual responsibility and cooperation across generations. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, families, community leaders, and organizations promoting lifelong and intergenerational learning. It will recommend that Adult Education programmes incorporate relevant content and practical activities that promote understanding of responsibilities between generations. Structured opportunities for knowledge sharing, mentoring, experience exchange, and collaborative learning may further strengthen adults’ awareness of their roles toward other generations. The study will conclude that effective Adult Education can improve adults’ understanding of intergenerational responsibility and contribute to stronger, more respectful, and mutually supportive relationships across generations.
