Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Homestay Entrepreneurship

Abstract

Adult Education refers to organized learning opportunities that provide adults with relevant knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies for personal, economic, and community development. Homestay entrepreneurship involves providing accommodation and related hospitality experiences to visitors within a residential setting as an entrepreneurial activity. Adults’ understanding of homestay entrepreneurship is important because it can help them recognize opportunities for utilizing available residential resources to provide accommodation services and participate in tourism-related economic activities. However, inadequate knowledge of homestay entrepreneurship may limit adults’ awareness of its principles, requirements, opportunities, and potential benefits. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of homestay entrepreneurship. Adult Education can expose adults to homestay-entrepreneurship concepts through discussions, practical activities, case studies, demonstrations, and community-based learning. Such learning experiences can introduce participants to the meaning and characteristics of homestay entrepreneurship, accommodation services, visitor needs, hospitality practices, customer relations, promotion, basic planning, and responsible hosting. By connecting these concepts with adults’ existing knowledge and experiences, Adult Education can help learners understand how residential accommodation can be developed and managed as a potential entrepreneurial opportunity. Adults’ understanding of homestay entrepreneurship involves their ability to explain its meaning, identify its characteristics, recognize potential opportunities, and understand the basic activities involved in providing homestay services. It also includes awareness of visitor expectations, hospitality standards, accommodation preparation, communication, promotion, customer satisfaction, and responsible management. Adult Education may strengthen this understanding by enabling adults to examine practical examples and consider how their existing resources, skills, and experiences can be applied to homestay-related entrepreneurial activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and entrepreneurship programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of homestay entrepreneurship. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of homestay entrepreneurship. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of homestay entrepreneurship. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of homestay concepts, accommodation services, visitor needs, hospitality practices, promotion, customer relations, and responsible hosting. The study is also expected to indicate that practical learning experiences can increase adults’ awareness of homestay entrepreneurship as a potential avenue for participating in tourism-related economic activities. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, entrepreneurship educators, tourism educators, hospitality trainers, and programme planners. Adult Education programmes may benefit from incorporating homestay entrepreneurship into relevant entrepreneurial and tourism-related learning activities. Practical discussions, hospitality simulations, case studies, accommodation-planning exercises, and customer-service activities can help adults develop a clearer understanding of the requirements associated with homestay services. Such learning can also encourage participants to examine local tourism opportunities and the potential role of residential accommodation in serving visitors. The study is expected to contribute to the understanding of how Adult Education can expand adults’ awareness of emerging opportunities within tourism and hospitality entrepreneurship. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes provide relevant learning opportunities on homestay entrepreneurship, hospitality practices, visitor needs, customer relations, accommodation preparation, promotion, and responsible hosting. These learning experiences should combine theoretical knowledge with practical activities that enable adults to understand the processes involved in homestay entrepreneurship. The study concludes that effective Adult Education can improve adults’ understanding of homestay entrepreneurship and increase their awareness of opportunities within the tourism and hospitality sector.
