Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Entrepreneurship Support Services

Abstract

Adult education provides adults with relevant knowledge, skills, and information that can improve their participation in economic and entrepreneurial activities. Entrepreneurship support services refer to the various forms of assistance available to entrepreneurs, including business advisory services, training opportunities, financial guidance, mentoring, market information, and other forms of enterprise development support. Limited understanding of such services may prevent adults from identifying and making appropriate use of available entrepreneurial assistance. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of entrepreneurship support services. Adult education can expose adults to information about the nature, functions, sources, and relevance of entrepreneurship support services. Learning activities may introduce participants to different types of support providers, eligibility requirements, application procedures, training opportunities, advisory services, and business development resources. Through discussions, case studies, information-analysis activities, practical exercises, and guided exploration, learners can examine how entrepreneurs can identify appropriate support services for their business needs. Such learning can improve adults’ familiarity with the support available to entrepreneurs. Adults’ understanding of entrepreneurship support services involves their ability to identify relevant services, explain their purposes, recognize potential sources of support, and understand the basic requirements for accessing them. Adult education can strengthen this understanding by presenting entrepreneurial support information in a structured and accessible manner. Increased knowledge may enable adults to distinguish between different forms of assistance and determine which services are relevant to particular business situations. Improved understanding can therefore support more informed decisions regarding available entrepreneurial resources. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of entrepreneurship support services. The population will consist of selected adult learners, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured entrepreneurship support-services knowledge assessment administered before and after exposure to the educational programme. The data obtained will be analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine changes in participants’ understanding. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to relevant adult education demonstrate improved understanding of entrepreneurship support services compared with their level of knowledge before the educational intervention. Participants are expected to show greater ability to identify different forms of entrepreneurial support, explain their purposes, recognize appropriate sources, and understand basic access requirements. The findings may indicate that adult education can improve adults’ awareness and understanding of resources that support entrepreneurial development. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators can use practical information-search activities, case studies, service directories, guided discussions, and business scenarios to help learners understand entrepreneurship support services. Learning activities can encourage adults to compare different forms of support and determine their relevance to specific entrepreneurial situations. Practical exercises involving the interpretation of support information may further strengthen learners’ ability to use such knowledge effectively. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, aspiring entrepreneurs, small-business operators, entrepreneurship development organizations, and institutions offering adult and continuing education programmes. Adults may gain better knowledge of available entrepreneurial assistance and become more capable of identifying relevant support resources. Educators may also gain useful information for developing entrepreneurship-oriented learning programmes, while support organizations may benefit from adults who have a clearer understanding of the services they provide. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate information on entrepreneurship support services through practical exercises, case studies, guided discussions, information-analysis activities, and realistic business scenarios. Adult educators should emphasize the types, purposes, sources, and basic access requirements of relevant support services. Learners should also be encouraged to evaluate support information carefully and identify services that correspond with particular entrepreneurial needs. The study concludes that adult education has the potential to improve adults’ understanding of entrepreneurship support services and strengthen their preparedness to identify appropriate resources for entrepreneurial development.
