Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Cultural Entrepreneurship
Abstract
Cultural entrepreneurship refers to the process of developing, organising, and managing economic activities based on cultural knowledge, creative expressions, traditions, heritage, and locally meaningful products or services. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge that can help them understand how cultural resources and creative abilities can be transformed into sustainable economic opportunities. As cultural assets increasingly contribute to livelihoods, innovation, tourism, and community development, understanding cultural entrepreneurship is important for adults seeking to participate in emerging economic activities. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of cultural entrepreneurship. Adult Education can expose learners to concepts associated with cultural entrepreneurship, including cultural products, creative enterprises, heritage-based businesses, traditional crafts, cultural services, market identification, innovation, and entrepreneurship development. Through structured learning activities, adults can explore how cultural knowledge and creative resources can be developed into products and services while maintaining their cultural value. Such education can also introduce learners to issues relating to branding, marketing, intellectual property, resource management, and responsible commercialisation of cultural assets. Adults’ understanding of cultural entrepreneurship involves their ability to explain its meaning, identify its characteristics, and recognise opportunities for developing culturally based products and services. Adults with relevant knowledge may be better positioned to distinguish cultural entrepreneurship from conventional entrepreneurial activities and appreciate the economic potential of cultural resources. Improved understanding can also help adults recognise appropriate ways of combining cultural knowledge, creativity, innovation, and market opportunities to develop sustainable cultural enterprises. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of cultural entrepreneurship. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of cultural entrepreneurship. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of cultural entrepreneurship. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved knowledge of cultural products, heritage-based enterprises, creative services, cultural markets, intellectual property, and entrepreneurial opportunities. The study may also reveal that practical learning experiences strengthen adults’ ability to recognise ways in which cultural knowledge and resources can support enterprise development and livelihood opportunities. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners and programme developers. Incorporating cultural entrepreneurship concepts into adult learning programmes can provide opportunities for learners to examine local cultural resources, identify potential products and services, explore market opportunities, and discuss responsible approaches to commercialising cultural assets. Such activities may strengthen adults’ understanding of the relationship between cultural knowledge, creativity, entrepreneurship, and economic participation. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, cultural entrepreneurs, community organisations, creative-industry stakeholders, heritage organisations, and policymakers interested in cultural and economic development. It is recommended that adult education programmes should incorporate practical learning activities on cultural entrepreneurship, cultural products, creative enterprise development, heritage resources, marketing, intellectual property, innovation, and responsible commercialisation. The study concludes that effective Adult Education can improve adults’ understanding of cultural entrepreneurship and support greater awareness of opportunities for transforming cultural resources and creative knowledge into sustainable economic activities.
