Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Community-Based Tourism
Abstract
Community-based tourism refers to tourism activities in which local people actively participate in the planning, management, and development of tourism resources and experiences within their communities. Adults’ understanding of community-based tourism is important because local residents play an essential role in preserving cultural resources, welcoming visitors, supporting local enterprises, and ensuring that tourism benefits are shared within the community. Limited understanding may reduce effective participation and weaken the ability of communities to manage tourism opportunities responsibly. Adult Education can provide adults with relevant knowledge and learning experiences that improve their awareness of tourism principles, community participation, cultural preservation, and sustainable tourism practices. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of community-based tourism. Adult Education can promote understanding of community-based tourism through learning activities that introduce adults to local tourism resources, cultural heritage, visitor management, community participation, and tourism-related opportunities. Discussions, field activities, community projects, case studies, and experiential learning can enable participants to examine how tourism can be developed around local resources while involving community members. Such learning experiences can also help adults understand the importance of protecting cultural and environmental resources while creating meaningful experiences for visitors. Through relevant education, adults may become more knowledgeable about their potential roles in community-based tourism development. Adults’ understanding of community-based tourism involves their knowledge of its objectives, principles, benefits, community participation processes, and responsibilities associated with developing tourism at the local level. It includes understanding how local people can participate in tourism planning, support tourism-related enterprises, preserve cultural resources, and contribute to positive visitor experiences. Adult Education may strengthen this understanding by connecting learning with local tourism opportunities and encouraging participants to examine practical community situations. Improved understanding may enable adults to recognize tourism as an opportunity for community development while appreciating the need for responsible management of local resources. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ exposure to Adult Education and their understanding of community-based tourism. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of community-based tourism. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of community-based tourism. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant educational activities may demonstrate stronger knowledge of community participation, tourism resources, cultural preservation, visitor relations, and responsible tourism practices. The findings may also indicate that practical and community-oriented learning experiences can help adults better understand the opportunities and responsibilities associated with tourism development within their communities. The findings may have important implications for Adult Education practitioners and community tourism facilitators. Adult learning programmes can incorporate field visits, community tourism projects, local heritage activities, case studies, group discussions, and practical exercises that expose participants to tourism opportunities within their communities. Facilitators can encourage learners to identify local attractions and explore ways of promoting them while protecting cultural and environmental resources. These approaches may make learning more practical and strengthen adults’ capacity to participate meaningfully in community-based tourism activities. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, community leaders, tourism organizations, local enterprises, and policymakers interested in community development and responsible tourism. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes provide accessible learning opportunities that increase adults’ knowledge of community-based tourism, local tourism resources, cultural preservation, and community participation. The study concludes that Adult Education has the potential to improve adults’ understanding of community-based tourism by providing relevant knowledge, practical experiences, and greater awareness of local participation in tourism development.
