Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Child Marriage Prevention
Abstract
Adult Education can play an important role in improving adults’ knowledge of social issues that affect children, families, and communities. Understanding of child marriage prevention refers to adults’ knowledge of the meaning, contributing factors, consequences, protective approaches, and relevant measures for preventing marriage involving children. Limited awareness of the risks and factors associated with child marriage may affect adults’ ability to support preventive efforts and protect children from harmful practices. This study will examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of child marriage prevention, with the purpose of determining whether relevant educational exposure can improve adults’ knowledge of preventive principles and appropriate protective practices. Adult Education can expose adults to important concepts related to child marriage prevention, including child rights, education, protection, informed decision-making, family and community responsibilities, and the importance of keeping children in school. Through structured learning experiences, adults can examine social, cultural, economic, and educational factors that may contribute to child marriage and consider appropriate approaches to prevention. Discussions, case studies, community dialogues, role-playing, and participatory learning activities can help adults examine real-life situations and develop a clearer understanding of how families and communities can contribute to protecting children. Such education can also promote informed attitudes toward practices that support children’s wellbeing and development. Understanding child marriage prevention is important because adults often influence family decisions, community attitudes, and the environments in which children grow and develop. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better able to recognize factors associated with child marriage, understand the importance of protecting children, support continued education, and identify appropriate community resources and protective measures. Adult Education may strengthen this understanding by providing accurate information and opportunities to discuss concerns surrounding child marriage in a respectful and constructive learning environment. Improved knowledge can therefore support adults in making informed decisions and contributing to preventive efforts within their communities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes and community-based learning activities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of child marriage prevention. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of child marriage prevention. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of child marriage prevention. Adults who receive relevant educational exposure may demonstrate improved knowledge of factors associated with child marriage, child protection principles, the importance of education, and appropriate preventive measures. The study is also expected to indicate that participatory learning experiences can improve adults’ ability to recognize situations that may place children at risk and increase their awareness of constructive ways families and communities can contribute to prevention. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community leaders, families, child-protection organizations, and facilitators of community-based learning programmes. Incorporating child-protection and prevention concepts into adult learning can provide participants with practical knowledge about factors associated with child marriage and ways of supporting protective community practices. Activities such as community dialogues, case discussions, role-playing, group reflection, and analysis of preventive approaches can make learning more practical and encourage informed discussion. These approaches may strengthen adults’ awareness and encourage greater community support for children’s education, protection, and wellbeing. The study will be significant to adult learners, families, community leaders, Adult Education practitioners, child-protection organizations, and other stakeholders concerned with children’s wellbeing. It will recommend that Adult Education programmes incorporate age-appropriate and culturally sensitive learning activities that improve adults’ understanding of child marriage prevention, child protection, and the importance of children’s continued development. Community-based education and awareness programmes may also be strengthened to encourage informed family and community participation in preventive efforts. The study will conclude that effective Adult Education can improve adults’ understanding of child marriage prevention and contribute to stronger community awareness and protective practices for children.
