Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Artificial Intelligence Ethics

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) ethics refers to the principles and considerations that guide the responsible development, deployment, and use of AI systems, particularly in relation to fairness, privacy, transparency, accountability, safety, and human well-being. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge that can help them understand emerging technologies and the ethical issues associated with their use. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into workplaces, education, communication, business, and everyday decision-making, understanding AI ethics is important for responsible participation in an AI-enabled society. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of Artificial Intelligence ethics. Adult Education can introduce learners to fundamental ethical issues associated with AI, including data privacy, algorithmic bias, transparency, accountability, human oversight, responsible data use, and potential discrimination. Through structured learning activities, adults can examine practical situations involving AI and consider how technological decisions may affect individuals and communities. Such education can also help learners understand the importance of using AI systems responsibly and recognising circumstances where human judgment and ethical considerations should guide technology use. Adults’ understanding of AI ethics involves their ability to explain key ethical principles and recognise ethical concerns that may arise from the development or use of AI systems. Adults with relevant knowledge may be better positioned to identify concerns relating to privacy, fairness, accountability, transparency, and responsible use when interacting with AI technologies. Improved understanding can therefore help adults evaluate AI-related situations more critically and make more informed judgments about appropriate and inappropriate uses of AI. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of Artificial Intelligence ethics. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of Artificial Intelligence ethics. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of Artificial Intelligence ethics. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved knowledge of ethical principles associated with AI, including privacy, fairness, transparency, accountability, safety, and human oversight. The study may also reveal that practical learning experiences strengthen adults’ ability to recognise ethical concerns and consider responsible approaches to AI use. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners and programme developers. Incorporating AI ethics into adult learning programmes can provide opportunities for learners to examine realistic AI-use situations, discuss ethical concerns, evaluate possible consequences, and consider responsible responses. Such activities may strengthen adults’ ethical awareness and encourage thoughtful engagement with AI technologies in personal, professional, and community settings. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, employers, community organisations, technology users, AI stakeholders, and policymakers interested in responsible technology use. It is recommended that adult education programmes should incorporate practical learning activities covering AI ethics, privacy, fairness, transparency, accountability, human oversight, responsible data use, and ethical decision-making. The study concludes that effective Adult Education can improve adults’ understanding of Artificial Intelligence ethics and support more responsible and informed engagement with AI technologies.
