Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Participation in Tree-Planting Activities
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities that equip adults with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and awareness needed to improve their personal and community lives, while participation in tree-planting activities involves adults’ involvement in planting, caring for, and maintaining trees for environmental and community benefits. Tree planting contributes to environmental protection, soil conservation, climate improvement, and sustainable land use, yet many communities still experience limited involvement in such activities. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in tree-planting activities. Adult education can provide adults with relevant environmental knowledge and practical skills through literacy programmes, community learning, workshops, extension education, and other forms of continuing education. Through these learning opportunities, adults can understand the importance of trees, appropriate tree-planting methods, tree maintenance practices, and the long-term environmental benefits of vegetation. Adult education can therefore provide the knowledge and practical awareness required for adults to become more actively involved in tree-planting activities. Adults’ participation in tree-planting activities refers to their willingness and actual involvement in planting trees, selecting suitable planting locations, caring for young trees, replacing damaged seedlings, and supporting tree-maintenance efforts. Adequate knowledge and practical understanding may encourage adults to recognize tree planting as an important environmental responsibility rather than an occasional community activity. Adult education may consequently improve adults’ willingness, knowledge, skills, and regular involvement in tree-planting activities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and participation in tree-planting activities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a significant positive effect on adults’ participation in tree-planting activities. It is expected that adults who receive environmental knowledge and practical learning through adult education programmes will demonstrate greater awareness of the importance of tree planting and higher levels of involvement in planting and maintaining trees. The study may also show that adult education strengthens adults’ willingness to support environmental conservation practices. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of environmental issues within adult education programmes. Adult educators may use practical demonstrations, community-based projects, environmental discussions, and experiential learning activities to make tree-planting education more meaningful to adult learners. Such approaches can connect classroom learning with practical environmental action and encourage adults to apply acquired knowledge within their communities. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community development organizations, environmental agencies, local authorities, and organizations involved in environmental education. Adult learners may gain useful knowledge and practical skills for participating in tree planting, while adult educators may obtain evidence for improving environmental education content. Community and environmental organizations may also use the findings to strengthen educational strategies for encouraging adult involvement in tree-planting programmes. The study will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate practical environmental education and tree-planting activities into their learning programmes. Adult educators should organize demonstrations, community tree-planting exercises, and follow-up activities that encourage adults to plant and maintain trees. Environmental organizations should collaborate with adult education providers to supply learning materials and planting resources. In conclusion, strengthening adult education can provide adults with the knowledge, skills, and motivation required to increase their participation in tree-planting activities and contribute to environmental sustainability.
