Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Participation in Public Transport Safety Programmes
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies, while public transport safety programmes are structured educational initiatives designed to promote safe practices among passengers and other road users who use buses, taxis, trains, and other forms of public transportation. Participation in public transport safety programmes can help adults acquire knowledge about safe travel practices, passenger responsibilities, hazard awareness, and appropriate responses to transport-related risks. However, limited exposure to relevant educational opportunities may affect adults’ involvement in such safety programmes. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in public transport safety programmes. Adult education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge through formal, non-formal, and informal learning experiences. These may include community classes, workshops, public awareness sessions, practical demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and other educational activities. Through such learning experiences, adults can develop the ability to understand safety information, recognize potential risks, follow appropriate procedures, and apply acquired knowledge to everyday situations. Adult education can therefore provide a foundation for greater awareness of public transport safety and encourage adults to engage with educational programmes designed to promote safer transportation practices. Adults’ participation in public transport safety programmes refers to their involvement in organized educational activities that provide information and practical guidance on safe use of public transportation. Such activities may include passenger safety campaigns, transport safety workshops, road safety talks, demonstrations, and educational sessions conducted at transport facilities. Adult education may influence participation by improving adults’ awareness of available programmes, strengthening their understanding of safety information, and increasing their interest in acquiring knowledge that can support safer use of public transport. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults who use public transportation within the selected study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on adults’ exposure to adult education and their participation in public transport safety programmes. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on participation in public transport safety programmes. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a significant effect on adults’ participation in public transport safety programmes. Adults with greater exposure to relevant educational opportunities are expected to demonstrate higher levels of involvement in transport safety talks, awareness campaigns, workshops, and other safety learning activities. The findings may also indicate that adult education improves adults’ awareness of transportation risks and encourages them to seek and participate in programmes that provide useful public transport safety information. The findings will have implications for adult education practice by highlighting the importance of incorporating practical transportation safety education into appropriate adult learning programmes. Adult educators can use demonstrations, discussions, simulations, visual materials, and real-life transportation scenarios to improve adults’ understanding of safe public transport practices. Such approaches can make safety education more relevant and enable adults to connect acquired knowledge with their everyday transportation experiences. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, transport safety organizations, public transport operators, community education providers, road safety practitioners, and policymakers. Adults may benefit from increased awareness of public transport safety information, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing safety-related learning activities. Transport organizations and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen educational initiatives that encourage adults to participate in public transport safety programmes. The study will recommend that adult education providers should incorporate relevant public transport safety topics into community-based and continuing education programmes. Adult educators should use practical demonstrations, safety campaigns, discussions, and realistic transport scenarios to encourage adults’ involvement in safety learning activities. Transport operators and safety organizations should also collaborate with adult education providers to make safety programmes accessible and relevant to adult passengers. The study concludes that effective adult education can encourage greater participation in public transport safety programmes by improving adults’ awareness, understanding, and interest in transport safety education.
