Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Participation in Community Mediation Processes

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies for personal, social, and community development, while community mediation processes refer to structured approaches through which individuals or groups in a community address disagreements and seek mutually acceptable solutions with the assistance of a neutral mediator. Effective participation in mediation can help community members communicate their concerns, understand different viewpoints, and contribute to peaceful resolution of disputes. However, limited knowledge of mediation procedures and communication skills may affect adults’ ability to participate effectively in such processes. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in community mediation processes. Adult education provides adults with opportunities to develop knowledge and skills that can be applied to social and interpersonal situations. Through formal, non-formal, and informal learning experiences, adults can acquire communication, listening, negotiation, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills. Adult education programmes may also expose learners to appropriate approaches for handling disagreements, communicating concerns, understanding different perspectives, and engaging constructively with other members of their communities. Adults’ participation in community mediation processes refers to the extent to which adults become involved in mediation activities, including attending mediation sessions, presenting relevant information, listening to other parties, communicating their concerns, considering possible solutions, and contributing to mutually acceptable agreements. Effective participation requires adults to understand the purpose and procedures of mediation and communicate appropriately during the process. Adult education may influence participation by providing adults with knowledge and skills that support constructive communication and involvement in mediation activities. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and adults’ participation in community mediation processes. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in community mediation processes. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ participation in community mediation processes. Adults with greater exposure to relevant educational experiences are expected to demonstrate greater willingness and ability to participate in mediation sessions, communicate their concerns, listen to other parties, consider alternative solutions, and contribute constructively to the resolution process. The findings may also identify specific mediation-related knowledge and skills that adults require additional learning opportunities to develop. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education teaching and learning. Adult educators can incorporate practical learning activities that develop communication, active listening, negotiation, problem-solving, and constructive interaction skills. Role-play exercises, case discussions, group activities, and simulated mediation situations may provide adult learners with opportunities to practise these skills and understand how they can be applied when addressing disagreements within their communities. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community leaders, mediators, community organizations, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved knowledge and skills for participating constructively in mediation processes. Adult educators and community organizations may gain useful information for developing educational programmes that prepare adults for constructive involvement in dispute-resolution processes, while community leaders and policymakers may use the findings to strengthen community-based mediation education. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate relevant mediation and dispute-resolution education into appropriate learning activities. Adult educators should use practical methods such as role-play, group discussions, case studies, and simulated mediation exercises to develop adults’ communication and participation skills. Community organizations and mediation providers should also collaborate with adult education centres to provide accessible information about mediation procedures and participation. The study concludes that adult education can contribute to improved participation in community mediation processes by equipping adults with relevant knowledge, communication skills, and practical abilities.
