Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Participation in Community Library Programmes
Abstract
Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies that can improve their educational and social development. Community library programmes provide access to reading materials, literacy activities, educational resources, information services, and learning opportunities that can support adults’ continuous development. However, some adults make limited use of community library programmes despite the availability of such services. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in community library programmes, with the purpose of determining whether exposure to adult education influences adults’ willingness and ability to make use of library-based learning opportunities. Adult education exposes learners to literacy skills, information-use skills, learning strategies, and awareness of available educational resources. Through literacy classes, continuing education activities, community learning programmes, and other forms of adult learning, adults can develop greater confidence in accessing and using educational materials. These learning experiences may also increase awareness of the functions and services provided by community libraries, thereby encouraging adults to view libraries as useful centres for learning and information. Participation in community library programmes refers to adults’ involvement in activities and services such as reading programmes, literacy sessions, educational workshops, information services, book discussions, and other learning activities organised through community libraries. Adult education may influence such participation by improving adults’ ability to understand library resources, identify relevant learning materials, and engage in organised library activities. Adults who acquire relevant knowledge and learning skills through adult education may therefore be more willing and prepared to participate in community library programmes. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners and adult community members who have access to selected community library programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and participation in community library programmes. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ participation in community library programmes. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to adult education will demonstrate higher levels of awareness, confidence, and involvement in library-based learning activities. The study may also establish that adult education helps adults recognise community libraries as accessible centres for continuing learning, information acquisition, and personal development. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education. Adult educators may need to incorporate practical activities that expose learners to community learning resources and demonstrate how library services can support their educational needs. Library-based learning activities can also be integrated into adult education programmes to strengthen learners’ information-use skills and encourage regular engagement with available educational resources. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community libraries, library programme coordinators, educational planners, and community development organisations. Adult learners may benefit from improved awareness and use of library resources, while adult educators may gain information for designing learning activities that connect classroom learning with community educational resources. Community libraries may also use the findings to improve programmes that encourage adult learning and engagement. The study will recommend that adult education programmes strengthen learners’ awareness of community library services and incorporate library-based learning activities into adult learning programmes. Community libraries should provide accessible and relevant programmes that respond to adults’ educational needs and encourage regular involvement. It will also recommend stronger collaboration between adult education providers and community libraries to promote sustained adult learning. The study will conclude that adult education can serve as an important avenue for increasing adults’ participation in community library programmes.
