Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Participation in Community Health Screening Programmes
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities designed to improve adults’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, and ability to make informed decisions, while participation in community health screening programmes refers to adults’ involvement in organized health checks intended to identify possible health conditions or risk factors at an early stage. Community health screening can promote early awareness and encourage timely use of appropriate health services. However, limited health knowledge, inadequate awareness, and misconceptions about screening may reduce adults’ willingness to participate. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in community health screening programmes. Adult education can provide adults with relevant knowledge about health, disease prevention, available health services, and appropriate health practices. Through literacy classes, health education sessions, community workshops, discussions, and other organized learning activities, adults may develop improved understanding of health information and greater confidence in making informed health decisions. Such educational experiences can also expose adults to the purpose and importance of community health screening programmes. Participation in community health screening programmes involves attending organized screening exercises, responding to screening invitations, obtaining relevant health information, and following appropriate recommendations provided by qualified health professionals. Adult education may influence participation by improving adults’ awareness of screening services and helping them understand the value of early identification of potential health problems. Increased health knowledge may therefore encourage adults to make informed decisions about participating in appropriate community screening programmes. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and participation in community health screening programmes. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ participation in community health screening programmes. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to adult education will demonstrate better knowledge of health screening, greater awareness of available screening opportunities, and stronger willingness to participate in appropriate community health screening programmes. The findings will have implications for adult education teaching and learning by demonstrating the importance of incorporating relevant health information into adult learning programmes. Adult educators may use health-related discussions, practical information sessions, community-based learning, and appropriate educational materials to improve learners’ understanding of preventive health services. Such approaches can help adults interpret basic health information and make more informed decisions about available screening opportunities. The study will be significant to adult educators, adult learners, community health workers, healthcare providers, community organizations, policymakers, and researchers. Adult educators may use the findings to develop learning activities that improve adults’ understanding of preventive health services, while health workers and community organizations may benefit from greater awareness of how adult education can support participation in appropriate screening programmes. Policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen collaboration between adult education and community health initiatives. The study will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate appropriate health education and information about available community health screening services. Adult educators should use accessible learning methods to improve adults’ understanding of the purpose and benefits of screening, while health professionals and community organizations should collaborate with adult education providers to provide accurate health information. The study will conclude that effective adult education can improve adults’ knowledge and awareness and encourage informed participation in appropriate community health screening programmes.
