Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Participation in Community Cultural Documentation
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies, while community cultural documentation refers to the systematic recording, preservation, and organization of information about the cultural practices, traditions, languages, stories, beliefs, crafts, and historical experiences of a community. Adult education can provide adults with the knowledge and skills needed to recognize, record, organize, and preserve culturally relevant information. However, limited knowledge of documentation methods may reduce adults’ involvement in preserving community cultural resources. Therefore, this study examines the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in community cultural documentation. Adult education can equip learners with literacy, communication, research, documentation, and information-management skills that are useful for recording cultural knowledge. Learning activities may include community-based projects, workshops, discussions, interviews, practical documentation exercises, and local research activities. Through these experiences, adults can learn how to collect information from community members, organize cultural materials, record oral histories, and preserve relevant community knowledge. Adult education may therefore provide a foundation for greater involvement in cultural documentation activities. Community cultural documentation involves activities such as recording oral histories, documenting traditional practices, collecting local stories, preserving photographs and historical accounts, recording indigenous knowledge, and organizing information about community events and cultural resources. Adults can contribute to these activities by sharing personal experiences, interviewing knowledgeable community members, recording information, and helping to organize cultural materials. Adult education may increase their ability and confidence to participate in these documentation activities by providing relevant knowledge and practical skills. The study will adopt a correlational research design. The population will comprise adults who have participated in selected adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and participation in community cultural documentation. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique to determine the effect of adult education on participation in community cultural documentation. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a significant effect on adults’ participation in community cultural documentation. Adults with greater exposure to relevant educational experiences are expected to demonstrate stronger involvement in recording oral histories, documenting local practices, preserving cultural materials, and organizing community cultural information. The findings are also expected to indicate that improved literacy, communication, research, and documentation skills can encourage adults to contribute more actively to cultural documentation activities. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adults. Adult education facilitators may need to incorporate community-based documentation activities into relevant learning programmes. Learners can be encouraged to conduct interviews, record oral histories, document traditional practices, and organize local cultural information as part of practical learning activities. Such approaches can connect adult education with real community experiences while developing useful documentation and research skills among adult learners. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult education facilitators, community cultural groups, traditional knowledge holders, cultural institutions, programme administrators, and education planners. Adult learners may gain practical skills for recording and preserving culturally relevant information. Facilitators may gain insight into the use of community-based cultural projects as learning activities, while cultural groups and institutions may benefit from increased community involvement in documenting local cultural resources. Education planners may also use the findings to support culturally relevant adult education programmes. The study recommends that adult education institutions should incorporate appropriate cultural documentation activities into relevant adult learning programmes. Facilitators should provide learners with practical opportunities to record oral histories, document local practices, collect community stories, and organize cultural information. Collaboration with knowledgeable community members and cultural groups should also be encouraged to ensure that documentation activities are respectful and accurate. In conclusion, adult education can provide adults with valuable knowledge and skills that encourage meaningful participation in community cultural documentation.
