Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Participation in Community-Based Recreational Programmes
Abstract
Adult education provides adults with knowledge, skills, and opportunities that can contribute to their personal development and quality of life. Community-based recreational programmes provide organised opportunities for adults to engage in leisure activities such as sports, games, fitness activities, creative activities, and social recreation within their communities. However, some adults have limited involvement in recreational programmes due to inadequate awareness, limited knowledge of available opportunities, or lack of confidence to participate. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in community-based recreational programmes, with the purpose of determining whether adult education influences adults’ involvement in recreational activities. Adult education involves formal, non-formal, and informal learning experiences through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and practical competencies. Through adult education programmes, workshops, group discussions, practical activities, and community learning experiences, adults can develop greater awareness of healthy leisure practices, social interaction, teamwork, and the importance of recreational activities. These learning experiences may encourage adults to recognise recreation as an important aspect of personal and community life. Participation in community-based recreational programmes refers to adults’ involvement in organised leisure activities provided within their communities. These may include community sports, exercise programmes, recreational games, creative activities, cultural recreation, and other leisure-based programmes. Adult education may influence participation by increasing adults’ awareness of available recreational opportunities, improving their understanding of the benefits of leisure activities, and developing skills and confidence that encourage active involvement. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners and adult community members who have access to community-based recreational programmes in selected communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and participation in community-based recreational programmes. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ participation in community-based recreational programmes. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to adult education will demonstrate greater awareness, interest, and involvement in available recreational activities. The study may further establish that adult education helps adults understand the personal and social value of recreation and encourages them to make greater use of recreational opportunities within their communities. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education. Adult educators may need to incorporate recreational and experiential activities into adult learning programmes to promote balanced personal development. Learning activities that encourage teamwork, physical activity, creativity, and social interaction may help adults recognise the value of recreation and develop greater willingness to participate in community-based recreational programmes. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community recreation providers, community organisations, recreational programme coordinators, and educational planners. Adult learners may benefit from greater awareness of recreational opportunities and their value for personal development, while adult educators may gain useful information for designing learning programmes that support adults’ participation in leisure activities. Community organisations and recreation providers may also use the findings to develop programmes that are more accessible and appealing to adults. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should include learning activities that increase adults’ awareness of the value and availability of community-based recreational programmes. Community recreation providers should develop accessible and inclusive recreational activities that respond to the interests and needs of adults, while adult educators should collaborate with community organisations to connect learners with appropriate recreational opportunities. The study will conclude that adult education can contribute significantly to improving adults’ participation in community-based recreational programmes.
