Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Tourist Information Services
Abstract
Tourist information services provide visitors and community members with useful information about attractions, accommodation, transportation, recreational activities, cultural sites, travel facilities, and other tourism-related resources. Adult Education can equip adults with relevant knowledge needed to understand the purpose, functions, and sources of tourist information services. This study will examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of tourist information services. The study is important because inadequate knowledge of available tourism information services may limit adults’ ability to access relevant travel information, assist visitors, and participate effectively in tourism-related activities within their communities. Adult Education can expose adults to different forms of tourist information services, including information centres, visitor assistance desks, tourism offices, brochures, directories, maps, digital information platforms, and community-based information channels. Through discussions, demonstrations, practical exercises, and community-based learning activities, adults can develop knowledge of the functions and usefulness of these services. Learning can also help adults understand the types of information provided by different tourism information services and how such information can support visitors in making appropriate travel and tourism decisions. Adults’ knowledge of tourist information services involves their ability to identify available services, understand their purposes, recognize the types of information they provide, and determine how they can be accessed. Adequate knowledge can enable adults to obtain accurate information about tourism attractions, routes, facilities, activities, and visitor requirements. Adult Education can therefore strengthen this knowledge by providing practical learning experiences that connect tourism information services with real-life community and travel situations. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of tourist information services. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of tourist information services. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of tourist information services. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of tourism information centres, visitor assistance services, tourism offices, printed information materials, digital platforms, and other sources of tourism information. The study may further establish that practical learning activities and exposure to authentic tourism information materials are useful for improving adults’ understanding of how tourist information services operate. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, tourism organizations, and programme planners. Relevant Adult Education programmes can incorporate practical tourism-information activities that introduce adults to different tourist information services and their functions. Demonstrations, information-search exercises, community tourism activities, and the use of tourism brochures, maps, directories, and digital platforms can make learning more practical and relevant to adults’ everyday experiences. The study will be significant to adult learners, community members, Adult Education practitioners, tourism stakeholders, and community development organizations by providing information on the role of education in improving knowledge of tourist information services. It will recommend greater inclusion of practical tourism-information content in appropriate Adult Education programmes and the use of learner-centred activities that enable adults to interact with different information services. The study will conclude that Adult Education can provide an effective avenue for strengthening adults’ knowledge of tourist information services and supporting informed participation in tourism activities.
