Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Seasonal Agricultural Planning
Abstract
Seasonal agricultural planning is important for helping adults make informed decisions about farming activities, including the timing of land preparation, planting, crop management, harvesting, storage, and the allocation of agricultural resources. Adequate knowledge of seasonal patterns can help farmers organize their activities according to expected environmental conditions and available resources. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical agricultural knowledge through structured learning, community-based programmes, discussions, demonstrations, and experience-sharing activities. This study therefore examines the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of seasonal agricultural planning, with emphasis on how educational experiences can improve their understanding of appropriate timing and organization of agricultural activities. Adult Education can expose adults to relevant information about agricultural seasons, farming calendars, weather patterns, crop cycles, soil preparation, planting periods, harvesting schedules, and resource planning. Through practical learning activities, adults can develop knowledge of how agricultural operations are organized across different periods of the farming cycle. Adult learning approaches that relate new information to existing agricultural experiences can also enable participants to understand seasonal planning more effectively and apply acquired knowledge to familiar farming situations. Knowledge of seasonal agricultural planning involves understanding how agricultural activities can be organized according to seasonal conditions and the requirements of different farming operations. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better able to identify suitable periods for major agricultural activities, anticipate seasonal changes, organize available resources, and coordinate farming tasks. Adult Education can strengthen this knowledge by providing opportunities for adults to examine agricultural calendars, discuss seasonal experiences, interpret relevant information, and develop practical plans for agricultural activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and agricultural learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of seasonal agricultural planning. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of seasonal agricultural planning. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of seasonal agricultural planning. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of agricultural seasons, timing of farming operations, crop-cycle planning, and the organization of resources for different stages of production. The study may also indicate that practical and experience-based learning approaches are particularly useful for helping adults connect seasonal agricultural information with their existing farming practices. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, agricultural extension educators, community learning facilitators, and programme planners. Adult Education programmes may incorporate practical activities such as agricultural calendars, seasonal planning exercises, group discussions, demonstrations, and analysis of local farming experiences. These approaches can help adults develop useful planning skills while strengthening their ability to apply agricultural information to decisions concerning different stages of farming activities. The study is expected to be significant to adult learners, farmers, agricultural educators, community development organizations, and other stakeholders interested in improving agricultural planning knowledge. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes provide practical and accessible learning opportunities that address seasonal agricultural planning and encourage adults to relate educational content to their farming experiences. The study concludes that relevant Adult Education can contribute to improved knowledge of seasonal agricultural planning and support more organized and informed agricultural decision-making among adults.
