Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Radio Broadcasting Terminology

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge and practical competencies that can improve their participation in communication, media, educational, and community activities. Radio broadcasting terminology refers to the specialized words and expressions commonly used to describe processes, roles, equipment, programme formats, and activities involved in radio broadcasting. Limited knowledge of such terminology may make it difficult for adults to understand radio-related discussions, educational programmes, or basic broadcasting activities. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of radio broadcasting terminology. Adult education can introduce learners to broadcasting concepts through discussions, demonstrations, audio examples, group activities, guided listening, and practical media-learning exercises. These activities can expose adults to common broadcasting terms and explain their meanings within relevant communication contexts. Learners can also participate in classification and identification exercises that require them to distinguish terms relating to programme production, presentation, studio activities, and broadcast content. Such practical learning experiences can make unfamiliar terminology easier to understand and retain. Knowledge of radio broadcasting terminology involves adults’ ability to recognize, define, distinguish, and appropriately interpret commonly used terms associated with radio broadcasting. This knowledge can help adults understand discussions about programme production, presentation, scheduling, studio operations, broadcast content, and other basic broadcasting activities. Adequate terminology knowledge can also improve adults’ ability to participate meaningfully in radio-related learning and communication activities. Adult education may therefore strengthen this knowledge by providing structured explanations, examples, guided listening, and opportunities to apply broadcasting terms in relevant contexts. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, communication, media-literacy, and continuing learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate terminology knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of radio broadcasting terminology. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of radio broadcasting terminology. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of radio broadcasting terminology. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to recognize, define, differentiate, and appropriately interpret commonly used radio broadcasting terms. The study is also expected to indicate that demonstrations, guided listening, practical examples, and terminology-identification activities can make broadcasting concepts more accessible and improve adults’ familiarity with specialized radio language. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, communication educators, community radio facilitators, media trainers, and programme developers. Adult education programmes that incorporate radio and communication learning should provide practical exposure to basic broadcasting terminology through audio examples, discussions, demonstrations, and guided activities. Facilitators should also encourage learners to use broadcasting terms in appropriate communication contexts so that terminology knowledge develops alongside practical understanding. The study will be significant to adult learners, community radio participants, educators, media trainees, broadcasters, and organizations involved in communication and lifelong learning. It will recommend that Adult Education programmes incorporate accessible and practical learning activities that develop adults’ knowledge of radio broadcasting terminology. The study will conclude that appropriately structured adult education can improve adults’ familiarity with specialized broadcasting language and strengthen their ability to understand and participate effectively in radio-related communication activities.
