Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Product Quality Indicators
Abstract
Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge that can improve their ability to make informed decisions in everyday consumer situations. One important area is knowledge of product quality indicators, which involves understanding the features, information, standards, and characteristics that can help consumers assess the quality of products before purchase or use. Limited knowledge of these indicators may make adults more dependent on promotional claims or superficial product characteristics when making purchasing decisions. This study therefore examines the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of product quality indicators, with the aim of determining whether participation in adult education can improve adults’ ability to recognize and understand information associated with product quality. Adult education can expose adults to product quality indicators through consumer education sessions, group discussions, practical demonstrations, case studies, product comparisons, and label-analysis activities. These approaches can help learners examine indicators such as product specifications, material composition, manufacturing information, certification marks, expiry information where applicable, packaging condition, durability features, and relevant quality standards. Through practical learning experiences, adults can develop greater awareness of the information that may assist them in assessing products and distinguishing important quality characteristics from purely promotional features. Knowledge of product quality indicators involves the ability to identify relevant quality information, understand common quality characteristics, recognize appropriate certification or standard information, and distinguish meaningful indicators from misleading or insufficient product claims. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better positioned to compare products, examine available information, identify signs of quality, and make more informed consumer decisions. Adult education can strengthen this knowledge by providing opportunities for learners to analyse actual products, compare product information, and discuss factors that influence product quality. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of product quality indicators. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of product quality indicators. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of product quality indicators. It is expected that adults exposed to structured learning activities will demonstrate improved ability to identify relevant product specifications, recognize quality-related information, understand certification or standard indicators, and distinguish important quality characteristics from promotional claims. The findings may also indicate that practical product-comparison and label-analysis activities provide useful opportunities for adults to develop applicable consumer knowledge. The findings may have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, consumer educators, community educators, and organizations concerned with consumer awareness. Adult Education programmes can incorporate practical exercises involving product comparison, packaging inspection, label interpretation, quality certification, and examination of product specifications. Such activities may help adults develop stronger knowledge of quality indicators and encourage more careful evaluation of products before purchase or use. The study will be significant to adults, consumers, Adult Education practitioners, consumer education organizations, researchers, and policymakers interested in strengthening informed consumer decision-making. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes incorporate relevant learning activities on product quality indicators, quality standards, certification information, product specifications, and other reliable quality characteristics. The study concludes that appropriately designed adult education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of product quality indicators and supporting more informed consumer choices.
