Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Livestock Housing Practices

Abstract

Livestock housing practices involve the methods used to provide suitable shelter, space, ventilation, cleanliness, protection, and general environmental conditions for keeping farm animals. Knowledge of appropriate livestock housing practices is important because proper housing can support animal comfort, hygiene, safety, and effective farm management. Inadequate knowledge may result in overcrowding, poor ventilation, inadequate sanitation, and unsuitable housing conditions that can negatively affect livestock management. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical agricultural knowledge through structured learning, demonstrations, and experience-based activities. This study therefore examines the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of livestock housing practices. Adult Education in this context involves structured learning activities designed to introduce adults to the basic principles and procedures of livestock housing. Such activities may include demonstrations, discussions, field observations, housing-design illustrations, and practical exercises on housing maintenance. Learners may be introduced to appropriate housing features such as adequate space, ventilation, drainage, roofing, flooring, feeding areas, watering facilities, cleanliness, and protection from environmental conditions. Practical learning activities can help adults understand how different housing features contribute to effective livestock management. Knowledge of livestock housing practices refers to adults’ understanding of suitable housing structures, space requirements, ventilation, sanitation, drainage, equipment arrangement, and routine housing maintenance. Adults with adequate knowledge are better positioned to recognize appropriate housing conditions and apply suitable practices when managing livestock facilities. Adult Education can strengthen this knowledge by combining theoretical explanations with demonstrations, field observations, and guided practical activities. Such learning experiences may improve adults’ ability to identify unsuitable housing conditions and make appropriate decisions regarding livestock housing management. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected agricultural, Adult Education, or community-based learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of livestock housing practices. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of livestock housing practices. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of livestock housing practices. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of housing requirements, ventilation, space management, sanitation, drainage, flooring, roofing, and routine housing maintenance. The study may further indicate that practical demonstrations and field-based learning contribute to improved knowledge because learners can observe suitable housing arrangements and relate theoretical information to actual livestock management situations. The findings are expected to have implications for adult educators, agricultural extension facilitators, livestock trainers, community learning providers, and organisations involved in agricultural skills development. Adult Education programmes should provide practical learning opportunities that enable adults to observe and discuss appropriate livestock housing arrangements. Demonstrations and field activities can help learners recognize suitable housing features and understand the importance of maintaining clean, safe, and well-ventilated livestock environments. Improved knowledge may support better livestock management practices and contribute to more effective small-scale agricultural activities. The study will conclude that Adult Education can serve as an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of livestock housing practices. It will recommend that relevant programmes incorporate housing-design demonstrations, field observations, identification exercises, sanitation activities, and supervised practical learning. Adult educators and agricultural facilitators should provide learners with opportunities to examine different housing conditions and understand appropriate maintenance practices. The study will contribute to the development of practical Adult Education programmes that equip adults with useful livestock housing knowledge for agricultural production and livelihood development.
