Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Household Space Management

Abstract

Household space management refers to the knowledge and practices involved in arranging, organizing, utilizing, and maintaining available spaces within the home for comfort, safety, convenience, and effective daily living. Adult education can provide adults with practical knowledge that improves their ability to make appropriate use of limited household spaces. This study will examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of household space management. The study is considered important because poor organization of household spaces may contribute to overcrowding, inefficient use of available areas, difficulty in movement, and poor living conditions. Adult Education can expose learners to practical principles of household space management, including space organization, furniture arrangement, storage planning, movement pathways, functional use of rooms, cleanliness, and efficient utilization of available household areas. Through relevant learning activities, adults can develop knowledge of how different household spaces can be arranged according to their purposes and the needs of household members. Adult learning can also encourage practical observation, problem-solving, and decision-making in managing available spaces. Adults’ knowledge of household space management involves their ability to identify appropriate ways of arranging and utilizing household areas while maintaining safety, accessibility, cleanliness, and convenience. Adequate knowledge can help adults recognize inefficient use of space and make informed decisions concerning storage, furniture placement, room functions, and the organization of household materials. Adult Education can therefore contribute to improved understanding by providing practical information and learning experiences that relate directly to everyday household management. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of household space management. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of household space management. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education is associated with improved knowledge of household space management. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate better understanding of space organization, functional room arrangement, storage practices, movement areas, household safety, and efficient use of available spaces. The study may further indicate that practical and experience-based learning activities are useful for helping adults apply household space-management knowledge to everyday living situations. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, and programme planners. Adult Education programmes may incorporate practical activities, demonstrations, discussions, illustrations, and problem-solving exercises that enable adults to examine common household space-management challenges and develop appropriate solutions. Such learning experiences can make household-related education more practical and relevant while encouraging adults to apply acquired knowledge to improve the organization, functionality, and safety of their living environments. The study will be significant to adult learners, households, Adult Education practitioners, community development organizations, and programme planners by providing useful information on the role of education in improving household space-management knowledge. It will recommend greater inclusion of practical household-management content in relevant Adult Education programmes and the use of learner-centred activities that connect learning with everyday household needs. The study will conclude that Adult Education can serve as a useful avenue for strengthening adults’ knowledge and practical understanding of effective household space management.
