Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Floor Screeding Techniques

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support vocational development, employment, self-reliance, and participation in productive activities. Floor screeding is an important construction technique involving the preparation, mixing, application, levelling, and finishing of screed materials on floor surfaces. However, some adults may have inadequate knowledge of appropriate floor screeding techniques because of limited access to structured practical learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of floor screeding techniques. Adult education programmes can provide practical and experience-based learning through demonstrations, guided instruction, discussions, illustrations, and supervised activities. In floor screeding, adults can learn about the materials and tools required, preparation of floor surfaces, appropriate mixing of screed materials, determination of suitable levels, application and spreading procedures, levelling, compaction, and finishing. These learning experiences can enable adults to relate theoretical explanations to practical construction activities and develop a clearer understanding of the procedures required for effective floor screeding. Adults’ knowledge of floor screeding techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, procedures, measurements, and practices involved in preparing and applying screed to floor surfaces. Adequate knowledge is important because poor surface preparation, incorrect material proportions, improper levelling, uneven application, and inadequate finishing can affect the quality and durability of a screeded floor. Adult education may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing structured instruction, practical demonstrations, and opportunities to observe and practise appropriate floor screeding procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of floor screeding techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of floor screeding techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of floor screeding techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of screeding materials, tools, floor preparation, material mixing, measurement and levelling, application, compaction, and finishing procedures. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised activities enhance adults’ ability to understand and retain knowledge relating to floor screeding. The study will conclude that adult education can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of practical floor screeding techniques. It will recommend that adult education and vocational programmes provide appropriate screeding tools and materials, practical demonstrations, supervised hands-on activities, and relevant safety guidance. Strengthening these learning opportunities can enhance adults’ practical knowledge, support vocational skill development, and improve their ability to apply appropriate floor screeding techniques in construction, maintenance, and income-generating activities.
