Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Consumer Product Standards

Abstract

Adult Education provides adults with relevant knowledge and practical skills that can support informed decisions in everyday consumer activities. Consumer product standards refer to established requirements and specifications relating to the quality, safety, composition, performance, labelling, and general acceptability of products offered to consumers. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of consumer product standards. The study will focus on how educational experiences can improve adults’ awareness of product requirements and their ability to recognize standards-related information when selecting and using consumer products. Adult Education can provide learners with information about product quality requirements, safety specifications, labelling provisions, certification indicators, and other standards-related characteristics. Through discussions, practical examples, demonstrations, and consumer-focused learning activities, adults can develop greater awareness of the features that distinguish products that meet established requirements from those that may not. Such learning experiences can also help adults understand the importance of checking relevant product information before purchasing or using goods. Adults’ knowledge of consumer product standards involves their understanding of basic requirements relating to product quality, safety, labelling, certification, composition, packaging, and performance. Adequate knowledge can help consumers recognize relevant standards information and understand its importance when evaluating products. Adult Education may contribute to this knowledge by introducing learners to practical consumer standards concepts and providing opportunities to examine examples of product labels, certification information, safety instructions, and quality indicators. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of consumer product standards. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of consumer product standards. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of consumer product standards. Adults who participate in relevant educational activities may demonstrate improved understanding of product quality requirements, safety information, certification indicators, labelling practices, and other standards-related features. The study may further establish that practical consumer education can strengthen adults’ ability to recognize and interpret information associated with established product standards. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, consumer educators, community learning facilitators, and organisations concerned with consumer awareness. Incorporating practical lessons on product standards into Adult Education programmes may help learners develop knowledge that can be applied to everyday purchasing and product-use situations. Learning activities involving product labels, certification information, packaging, safety instructions, and quality indicators may provide adults with useful opportunities to develop and apply standards-related knowledge. The study will be significant to adult learners, consumers, Adult Education practitioners, consumer educators, and other stakeholders interested in promoting informed consumer practices. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes should incorporate practical consumer-learning activities that expose adults to basic concepts of product standards and their relevance to consumer decisions. The study concludes that Adult Education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of consumer product standards and strengthening their capacity to make more informed choices regarding products.
