Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Community Leadership Responsibilities
Abstract
Adult education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge that can strengthen their understanding and participation in community affairs. One important area is knowledge of community leadership responsibilities, which involves understanding the duties, roles, obligations, and expected conduct of individuals entrusted with leadership positions within a community. Limited knowledge of these responsibilities may make it difficult for adults to understand leadership performance, participate effectively in community affairs, or contribute constructively to community decision-making. This study therefore examines the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of community leadership responsibilities, with the aim of determining whether participation in adult education can improve adults’ understanding of leadership duties within their communities. Adult education can provide learning opportunities on community leadership through group discussions, workshops, community meetings, case studies, leadership awareness activities, and participatory exercises. These approaches can help adults understand responsibilities relating to representation, communication, decision-making, community development, conflict management, accountability, and coordination of community activities. By using practical examples from community situations, adult education can make leadership concepts easier for adults to understand and apply. Such learning experiences can also encourage adults to examine the relationship between effective leadership and the achievement of community development objectives. Knowledge of community leadership responsibilities involves the ability to identify the duties of community leaders, explain their obligations to community members, recognize appropriate leadership practices, and understand the importance of accountability and responsible decision-making. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better positioned to participate in community meetings, communicate relevant concerns, assess leadership activities, and support constructive community initiatives. Adult education can strengthen this knowledge by providing opportunities for adults to analyse leadership situations, discuss community responsibilities, and develop a clearer understanding of the expectations associated with different leadership roles. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of community leadership responsibilities. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of community leadership responsibilities. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of community leadership responsibilities. It is expected that adults exposed to structured learning activities will demonstrate improved understanding of leadership duties relating to representation, communication, decision-making, accountability, conflict management, and community development. The findings may also indicate that practical and participatory learning approaches are useful for helping adults connect leadership responsibilities with situations encountered within their communities. The findings may have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, community leaders, community development facilitators, and organizations involved in community development activities. Adult education programmes can incorporate leadership case studies, community discussions, role-playing activities, and practical exercises that enable adults to examine leadership responsibilities in realistic situations. Such activities may improve adults’ understanding of responsible leadership while encouraging constructive participation in community affairs. The study will be significant to adults, community leaders, Adult Education practitioners, community development organizations, researchers, and policymakers interested in strengthening informed community participation. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes incorporate relevant content on community leadership duties, accountability, representation, communication, and responsible decision-making. The study concludes that appropriately designed adult education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of community leadership responsibilities and strengthening their informed participation in community affairs.
