Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Community-Based Organizations
Abstract
Adult education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge that can improve their understanding of social institutions and available community resources. One important area is knowledge of community-based organizations, which involves awareness of organizations operating within communities to address social, educational, economic, cultural, welfare, and developmental needs. Limited knowledge of such organizations may prevent adults from recognizing available opportunities for support, participation, collaboration, and community development. This study therefore examines the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of community-based organizations, with the aim of determining whether participation in adult education can improve adults’ awareness and understanding of these organizations and their functions. Adult education can expose learners to information about community-based organizations through discussions, group activities, community visits, workshops, case studies, and practical learning exercises. These approaches can introduce adults to different types of organizations, their objectives, membership structures, activities, services, and methods of community engagement. By using examples drawn from the learners’ immediate environment, adult education can make information about community-based organizations more relevant and easier to understand. Such learning experiences may also encourage adults to examine how organized community groups contribute to solving local challenges. Knowledge of community-based organizations involves the ability to identify such organizations, recognize their purposes, understand their activities, and explain the services or opportunities they provide to community members. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better positioned to identify organizations relevant to their needs, participate in appropriate programmes, and contribute to community initiatives. Adult education can strengthen this knowledge by providing learners with opportunities to discuss organizational roles, examine community activities, interact with community representatives, and explore ways through which organizations support community development. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of community-based organizations. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of community-based organizations. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of community-based organizations. It is expected that adults exposed to structured learning activities will demonstrate improved ability to identify community-based organizations, explain their functions, recognize the services they provide, and understand opportunities for participation. The findings may also indicate that practical and community-oriented learning approaches are useful for helping adults connect organizational information with actual community needs and available development opportunities. The findings may have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, community development facilitators, community organizations, and programme coordinators. Adult education programmes can incorporate information about relevant community organizations, their activities, membership opportunities, and community services. Practical activities such as organization mapping, group discussions, community visits, and interactions with organizational representatives may further improve learners’ understanding and encourage informed participation in community initiatives. The study will be significant to adults, community-based organizations, Adult Education practitioners, community development organizations, researchers, and policymakers interested in strengthening community participation and access to local resources. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes provide relevant information about community-based organizations and create opportunities for adults to interact with them. The study concludes that appropriately designed adult education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of community-based organizations and strengthening their ability to participate meaningfully in community development activities.
