Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Basic Gardening Techniques

Abstract

Basic gardening techniques involve practical methods used in preparing planting spaces, selecting suitable plants, planting, watering, weeding, maintaining soil conditions, and caring for plants. Knowledge of these techniques enables adults to manage small gardens effectively and apply appropriate practices for healthy plant growth. However, inadequate knowledge may result in poor planting methods, improper watering, ineffective weed control, and reduced plant development. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical agricultural and environmental knowledge through structured learning activities and hands-on experiences. This study therefore examines the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of basic gardening techniques. Adult Education in this context involves structured learning activities designed to introduce adults to fundamental gardening principles and procedures. Such activities may include demonstrations, discussions, garden observations, soil-preparation exercises, seed or plant identification, planting demonstrations, watering activities, and guided maintenance practice. Learners may also be introduced to basic gardening tools and their appropriate uses. Practical learning allows adults to observe gardening procedures directly and develop familiarity with the sequence of activities required for establishing and maintaining a simple garden. Knowledge of basic gardening techniques refers to adults’ understanding of soil preparation, plant selection, planting methods, watering, weeding, basic plant care, garden maintenance, and appropriate use of gardening tools. Adults with adequate knowledge are better positioned to select suitable plants, prepare growing spaces, apply appropriate planting methods, and maintain garden areas effectively. Adult Education can strengthen this knowledge by combining explanations with demonstrations, field observations, guided practice, and repeated learning activities. Such experiences may improve adults’ confidence and ability to apply gardening knowledge in household and community settings. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, agricultural, or community-based learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of basic gardening techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of basic gardening techniques. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of basic gardening techniques. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of soil preparation, plant selection, planting, watering, weeding, garden maintenance, and appropriate tool use. The study may further indicate that practical demonstrations and garden-based activities contribute significantly to improved knowledge because learners are able to observe gardening procedures and apply them through guided practice. The findings are expected to have implications for adult educators, agricultural extension facilitators, community learning providers, environmental educators, and organisations involved in practical skills development. Adult Education programmes should provide opportunities for learners to participate in gardening demonstrations and supervised activities. Practical exposure can help adults connect agricultural information with everyday gardening situations while developing useful knowledge for household food production, environmental improvement, and community beautification. Such knowledge may also encourage adults to make productive use of available garden spaces. The study will conclude that Adult Education can serve as an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of basic gardening techniques. It will recommend that relevant programmes incorporate practical demonstrations, soil-preparation activities, plant-identification exercises, planting practice, garden maintenance activities, and appropriate tool-handling guidance. Adult educators should provide repeated opportunities for learners to practise gardening techniques and receive constructive feedback. The study will contribute to the development of practical Adult Education programmes that equip adults with useful gardening knowledge for household, community, environmental, and livelihood-related applications.
