Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Basic Computer Networking

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire relevant knowledge and practical skills that can improve their participation in vocational, occupational, and technology-related activities. Computer networking involves the connection and communication of computers and other digital devices through appropriate hardware, software, configurations, and procedures. Basic knowledge of computer networking is increasingly important as individuals and organizations rely on interconnected digital systems for communication, information sharing, and access to online services. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of basic computer networking due to inadequate access to structured learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of basic computer networking. Adult education can provide learners with practical and experience-based learning activities through demonstrations, guided instruction, discussions, illustrations, and supervised exercises. In basic computer networking, adults can learn about common networking devices, network components, connection methods, basic network configurations, data communication, and simple procedures for establishing and maintaining network connections. Such learning activities can enable adults to relate theoretical explanations to practical experiences and develop a clearer understanding of how interconnected computer systems operate. Adults’ knowledge of basic computer networking refers to their understanding of fundamental networking concepts, devices, components, connections, configurations, and basic troubleshooting procedures. Adequate knowledge is important because individuals who understand basic networking principles are better positioned to identify common network components, understand how devices communicate, and perform simple networking-related tasks. Adult education may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing structured explanations, practical demonstrations, and opportunities to engage with relevant networking equipment and activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of basic computer networking. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of basic computer networking. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of basic computer networking. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of networking devices, network components, connection procedures, basic configurations, data communication, and simple troubleshooting practices. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised exercises enhance adults’ ability to understand and retain fundamental computer networking knowledge. The study will conclude that adult education can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of basic computer networking. It will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate practical networking demonstrations, appropriate computer networking equipment, guided exercises, and relevant instructional materials into their learning activities. Strengthening these opportunities can improve adults’ digital knowledge, support vocational development, and enhance their ability to participate effectively in technology-based activities.
