Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Basic Carpentry Tools
Abstract
Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can improve their participation in vocational and livelihood activities. Basic carpentry tools are essential for carrying out simple woodworking tasks, furniture repairs, construction activities, and household maintenance. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of the names, functions, proper handling, and appropriate applications of commonly used carpentry tools. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of basic carpentry tools, with particular attention to the extent to which structured learning can improve their understanding and practical awareness of commonly used tools. Adult education can provide organized learning experiences through demonstrations, practical exercises, discussions, illustrations, and guided activities. In the context of carpentry, such learning experiences can introduce adults to tools such as hammers, saws, chisels, screwdrivers, planes, measuring tapes, squares, pliers, and other basic equipment. Through appropriate learning activities, adults can develop knowledge of tool identification, functions, correct handling procedures, maintenance requirements, and suitable applications. Practical exposure can also help learners connect theoretical explanations with real-life carpentry tasks. Knowledge of basic carpentry tools involves more than simply recognizing their names. Adults need to understand the specific purpose of each tool, distinguish between tools with similar appearances or functions, and identify the appropriate tool for a particular task. Adequate knowledge can contribute to more effective participation in carpentry-related activities and reduce inappropriate tool selection and handling. Adult education may therefore serve as an important means of strengthening adults’ practical knowledge by providing opportunities for observation, practice, questioning, feedback, and repeated exposure to basic carpentry tools. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and vocational learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of basic carpentry tools. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of basic carpentry tools. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education is associated with improved knowledge of basic carpentry tools. It is expected that adults who receive structured learning opportunities will demonstrate better recognition of common tools, understanding of their functions, knowledge of appropriate applications, and awareness of basic handling and maintenance practices. The findings are also expected to indicate that practical demonstrations and hands-on learning activities can provide useful opportunities for reinforcing adults’ understanding of carpentry tools and their everyday applications. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, vocational instructors, community learning facilitators, and programme developers. Incorporating practical demonstrations, tool identification activities, supervised exercises, visual materials, and task-based learning into adult education programmes may make learning more meaningful and useful. Such approaches can help adults develop practical knowledge that can be applied to household repairs, vocational activities, small-scale woodworking, and other livelihood-related tasks. The study will be significant to adult learners, vocational training providers, community education programmes, and other stakeholders interested in practical skills development. It will recommend that adult education programmes provide adequate opportunities for learners to observe, identify, handle, and understand basic carpentry tools within safe and structured learning environments. The study will conclude that well-organized adult education can contribute to strengthening adults’ practical knowledge of basic carpentry tools and support their ability to apply such knowledge in relevant everyday and vocational activities.
