Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Set Realistic Learning Targets

Abstract

Adult education provides adults with knowledge, skills, and learning experiences that can support their personal, educational, and professional development, while the ability to set realistic learning targets refers to the capacity to establish clear, achievable, measurable, and appropriate objectives for learning within available time and resources. Setting realistic learning targets is important because adults often combine educational activities with work, family responsibilities, and other commitments. However, some adult learners may establish learning targets that are either too difficult or unsuitable for their circumstances, which may affect their learning progress. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to set realistic learning targets. Adult education exposes learners to different approaches for organizing learning activities and achieving educational objectives. Through classroom instruction, guided learning activities, practical exercises, and reflective tasks, adults can develop skills for identifying learning needs, determining priorities, establishing achievable objectives, and monitoring progress. Adult education can also provide learners with opportunities to consider their existing knowledge, available resources, learning time, and areas requiring improvement when developing learning targets. The ability to set realistic learning targets involves identifying specific learning objectives that are achievable within a defined period and consistent with an individual’s capabilities and available resources. Adults who can establish realistic targets are better able to organize their learning activities, monitor progress, and make necessary adjustments when circumstances change. Adult education can contribute to this ability by helping learners understand their learning needs and apply systematic approaches to establishing appropriate educational targets. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in adult education and adults’ ability to set realistic learning targets. The data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to set realistic learning targets. Adults who participate in adult education programmes are expected to demonstrate greater ability to formulate clear and achievable learning targets, consider available time and resources, establish appropriate priorities, and monitor their progress toward educational objectives. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may incorporate practical target-setting activities into learning programmes and guide learners in developing objectives that correspond with their individual learning needs and circumstances. Regular review of learning targets may also help learners recognize progress, identify challenges, and make appropriate adjustments to their learning activities. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, programme coordinators, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved ability to establish achievable learning objectives, while educators may gain useful information for developing instructional activities that encourage purposeful learning. Programme coordinators and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen learner-support practices within adult education programmes. The study will recommend that adult education programmes provide practical instruction on setting clear, achievable, and measurable learning targets. Adult educators should encourage learners to consider their learning needs, available resources, time commitments, and current abilities when establishing targets and to review their progress regularly. The study will conclude that adult education can strengthen adults’ ability to set realistic learning targets and support more purposeful and organized learning.
