Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Recognize Persuasive Techniques in Advertisements

Abstract

Advertisements are designed to attract attention, influence perceptions, and encourage audiences to develop favourable attitudes toward products, services, ideas, or brands. Adults encounter advertisements through television, radio, newspapers, social media, websites, billboards, and other communication channels, making the ability to recognize persuasive techniques important for informed interpretation of promotional messages. Without adequate awareness, adults may accept advertising claims without carefully examining the methods used to influence their choices. Adult Education can develop critical thinking, media awareness, information evaluation, and decision-making skills that may help adults identify persuasive techniques in advertisements. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to recognize persuasive techniques in advertisements. Adult Education can expose learners to principles of media communication, advertising messages, critical analysis, information evaluation, and consumer awareness. Through discussions, practical examples, case studies, advertisements analysis, and group activities, adults can examine how advertisers use language, imagery, emotional appeals, repetition, endorsements, social influence, and other persuasive approaches to attract and influence audiences. Such learning experiences may enable adults to look beyond the surface content of advertisements and consider how particular communication strategies are intended to shape attitudes or behaviour. Adult Education can therefore provide practical opportunities for developing greater awareness of persuasive communication. Adults’ ability to recognize persuasive techniques in advertisements refers to their capacity to identify and understand the communication methods used to influence an audience. This ability involves paying attention to the wording, presentation, emotional appeals, claims, imagery, endorsements, and other features of promotional messages. Adult Education may strengthen this ability by encouraging learners to question advertising messages, compare information, identify persuasive elements, and distinguish promotional strategies from objective information. Improved recognition of persuasive techniques may enable adults to evaluate advertisements more critically before forming judgments or making decisions based on them. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to recognize persuasive techniques in advertisements. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to recognize persuasive techniques in advertisements. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to recognize persuasive techniques in advertisements. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational experiences will demonstrate improved ability to identify emotional appeals, repetition, endorsements, selective presentation of information, and other persuasive features used in advertisements. The study may further establish that practical analysis of real or simulated advertisements helps adults develop stronger critical awareness and become more deliberate when interpreting promotional messages. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners in developing learning activities that strengthen media and information evaluation skills. Adult Education programmes can incorporate advertisement analysis, group discussions, practical exercises, case studies, and comparative activities that allow learners to examine different persuasive techniques and consider their intended effects. These approaches can make learning more practical and help adults apply critical evaluation skills when encountering promotional messages across traditional and digital media. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, consumers, community organizations, media educators, and other groups interested in strengthening critical interpretation of information. It is expected to recommend greater emphasis on advertising awareness, critical media analysis, information evaluation, and recognition of persuasive communication techniques within relevant Adult Education programmes. The study concludes that Adult Education can provide adults with useful knowledge and practical skills for recognizing persuasive techniques in advertisements, thereby supporting more critical interpretation of promotional messages and more informed decision-making.
