Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Interpret Price Discounts

Abstract

Price discounts refer to reductions offered on the original selling price of goods or services, while the ability to interpret price discounts involves understanding discount percentages, reduced prices, applicable conditions, and the actual savings associated with an offer. Limited ability to interpret discounts may cause adults to misunderstand promotional offers or make inaccurate purchasing decisions. Adult education can provide practical numerical and consumer skills that support accurate interpretation of price reductions. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to interpret price discounts. Adult education can teach adults how to understand common discount expressions and determine the relationship between an original price, discount rate, discount amount, and final selling price. Through practical exercises, demonstrations, examples, and real-life purchasing scenarios, learners can practise calculating and interpreting different types of price discounts. Such activities can help adults develop practical skills for evaluating promotional offers and understanding the financial implications of discounted prices. Adults’ ability to interpret price discounts involves identifying the original price, determining the percentage or amount of reduction, calculating the resulting price, and understanding any conditions attached to the offer. Adult education can strengthen these abilities by providing repeated opportunities to solve practical discount problems and interpret promotional information. Improved interpretation skills may enable adults to assess price reductions more accurately and make informed purchasing decisions. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners in the study area, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and practical assessment items designed to measure exposure to adult education and adults’ ability to interpret price discounts. The instrument will be validated by experts, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to interpret price discounts. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to understand discount percentages, calculate reductions, determine final prices, and identify the actual savings represented by promotional offers. The findings may also indicate that practical numerical exercises based on everyday purchasing situations can strengthen adults’ ability to apply discount calculations. The study may have implications for the teaching and learning of functional numeracy and consumer education within adult education programmes. Adult educators may need to incorporate practical shopping examples, price tags, promotional advertisements, and calculation exercises into classroom activities. These approaches can help learners connect mathematical knowledge with everyday purchasing situations and improve their confidence in interpreting price information. The findings may benefit adult learners, adult educators, consumers, households, consumer education providers, and community learning organisations. Adults may develop stronger practical numeracy skills for evaluating discounted prices, while educators may gain useful approaches for teaching consumer-related calculations. Households may also benefit when adults are better able to assess promotional offers and understand the financial implications of price discounts. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical lessons on interpreting price discounts using realistic purchasing examples. Adult educators should employ demonstrations, guided calculations, promotional materials, and repeated practice to strengthen learners’ understanding. Relevant organisations should also promote consumer education that improves adults’ ability to interpret price information accurately. The study concludes that adult education can contribute meaningfully to improving adults’ ability to interpret price discounts when instruction is practical, clear, and connected to everyday consumer experiences.
