Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Interpret Interest Rates on Financial Services
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities designed to provide adults with knowledge, skills, and competencies for effective participation in personal, economic, and social activities, while the ability to interpret interest rates on financial services refers to the capacity of adults to understand, compare, and correctly interpret the interest rates attached to financial products such as loans, savings accounts, credit facilities, and other financial services. The ability to interpret interest rates is important because misunderstanding rates may lead adults to make unsuitable financial decisions or underestimate the cost or return associated with financial services. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to interpret interest rates on financial services. Adult education can expose learners to basic financial concepts and practical knowledge required to understand interest rates. Through adult learning programmes, financial literacy classes, workshops, community education, and other structured learning activities, adults can learn about interest rates, principal amounts, interest charges, repayment obligations, savings returns, and the differences between various rate presentations. Such learning experiences can provide adults with the knowledge and practical skills needed to read financial information and make meaningful comparisons among financial services. Adults’ ability to interpret interest rates on financial services refers to their capacity to understand the meaning and financial implications of stated rates and apply such information when examining financial products. This may include distinguishing between different interest-rate presentations, understanding how rates affect loan repayments or savings returns, and comparing rates offered by different financial service providers. Adult education may improve this ability by equipping learners with relevant financial concepts and opportunities to apply them to practical financial situations. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and, where appropriate, practical interest-rate interpretation tasks designed to measure exposure to adult education and adults’ ability to interpret interest rates on financial services. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to interpret interest rates on financial services. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to interpret interest rates on financial services. Adults with greater exposure to relevant educational experiences are expected to demonstrate better understanding of stated interest rates and their implications for borrowing, saving, and other financial transactions. The study may also reveal specific areas of difficulty, such as comparing rates or understanding how stated rates affect the overall cost of financial services. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education teaching and learning. Adult educators can incorporate practical financial education into relevant adult learning programmes using examples drawn from everyday financial services. Activities involving the interpretation and comparison of interest rates, loan offers, savings products, and repayment information can help learners develop practical financial understanding. This approach can make adult education more responsive to the financial decisions adults encounter in their daily lives. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, financial literacy providers, financial institutions, community education organizations, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved ability to understand financial information and compare financial products, while adult educators may gain useful information for designing practical financial education content. Financial institutions and policymakers may also use the findings to support clearer financial literacy initiatives and improve adults’ understanding of financial service information. The study recommends that adult education programmes should include practical lessons on interpreting interest rates and other financial information. Adult educators should use simple explanations, worked examples, financial product comparisons, and practical exercises to strengthen learners’ understanding of interest-rate information. Financial education providers should also collaborate with relevant financial institutions to provide accurate and accessible learning materials. The study concludes that adult education can contribute to improved ability among adults to interpret interest rates on financial services by providing the knowledge and practical skills required to understand the financial implications of different rates.
