Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Workplace Fatigue Risks
Abstract
Adult education provides adults with knowledge, skills, and practical information that can support healthier and safer participation in work activities. Workplace fatigue risks refer to work-related conditions or situations that may increase the likelihood of excessive tiredness, reduced alertness, or diminished capacity to perform tasks safely and effectively. Adults’ ability to identify workplace fatigue risks involves recognizing work conditions, routines, and warning signs that may contribute to fatigue. Limited understanding of such risks may reduce adults’ ability to recognize situations requiring appropriate preventive action. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to identify workplace fatigue risks. Adult education on workplace fatigue risks can introduce adults to common factors associated with work-related fatigue, including prolonged work periods, demanding tasks, insufficient recovery time, irregular work schedules, and sustained concentration. Learning activities may involve discussions, demonstrations, workplace scenarios, case studies, and practical identification exercises. Through these approaches, learners can examine different work situations and recognize factors that may increase fatigue. Such education can provide adults with a structured way of identifying fatigue-related risks within their work environments. Adults’ ability to identify workplace fatigue risks involves recognizing relevant work conditions, identifying signs associated with excessive tiredness, and distinguishing situations that may require attention from ordinary work demands. Adult education can strengthen this ability by providing clear information and practical opportunities for learners to analyze workplace situations. Improved understanding of fatigue-related risks may enable adults to recognize potential problems earlier and make more informed decisions about their work routines and safety. Education can therefore contribute to greater awareness of factors that may affect alertness and work performance. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to identify workplace fatigue risks. The population will consist of selected adult learners or workers, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured workplace fatigue-risk identification assessment administered before and after exposure to the educational programme. The data obtained will be analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine changes in participants’ ability to identify fatigue risks. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to structured education on workplace fatigue demonstrate improved ability to identify workplace fatigue risks compared with their performance before the educational intervention. Participants are expected to show greater ability to recognize work conditions associated with fatigue, identify relevant warning signs, and distinguish potentially risky work situations from ordinary workplace demands. The findings may indicate that adult education can strengthen adults’ awareness and recognition of workplace fatigue risks. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators can use workplace scenarios, case studies, visual materials, discussions, and practical risk-identification exercises to help learners recognize fatigue-related risks. Learning activities can present realistic work situations and encourage adults to identify factors that may contribute to fatigue and reduced alertness. Such practical approaches may make occupational health education more understandable, relevant, and applicable to adults’ everyday work experiences. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, workers, adult educators, employers, workplace organizations, and institutions providing occupational health and continuing education programmes. Adults may develop stronger awareness of conditions that can contribute to workplace fatigue, while educators may gain useful information for designing practical occupational health learning activities. Employers and organizations may also benefit from workers who are better able to recognize fatigue-related risks and understand the importance of maintaining safer work routines. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate workplace fatigue-risk education through practical scenarios, case studies, discussions, demonstrations, and risk-identification exercises. Adult educators should emphasize recognition of work-related fatigue factors, warning signs, and situations that may require appropriate preventive attention. Workplace learning programmes should also provide adults with opportunities to apply fatigue-risk identification skills to realistic work situations. The study concludes that relevant adult education has the potential to improve adults’ ability to identify workplace fatigue risks and strengthen awareness of safer work practices.
