Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Their Individual Learning Needs
Abstract
Adult education provides adults with knowledge, skills, and learning experiences that support personal, social, and educational development, while the ability to identify individual learning needs refers to the capacity to recognize gaps in knowledge, skills, understanding, and competencies that require further learning. Identifying personal learning needs is important because it enables adult learners to determine what they need to learn and select appropriate learning activities to address identified gaps. However, some adults may have difficulty recognizing their specific learning needs, which can affect their ability to make appropriate learning decisions. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to identify their individual learning needs. Adult education exposes learners to learning activities that encourage self-awareness, reflection, assessment, and recognition of areas requiring improvement. Through classroom activities, discussions, practical exercises, feedback, and learning assessments, adults can examine their existing knowledge and skills and compare their abilities with the demands of particular learning tasks. These experiences can help learners recognize areas where additional knowledge or skills may be necessary and develop greater awareness of their individual learning requirements. The ability to identify individual learning needs involves recognizing areas in which a learner lacks sufficient knowledge, skills, understanding, or competence and determining what additional learning may be required. Adults who can identify their learning needs are better positioned to select relevant learning activities, seek appropriate learning resources, and direct their efforts toward areas requiring improvement. Adult education can therefore support this ability by providing learners with opportunities to assess their existing capabilities and recognize specific areas for further development. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in adult education and adults’ ability to identify their individual learning needs. The data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to identify their individual learning needs. Adults who participate in adult education programmes are expected to demonstrate greater ability to recognize gaps in their knowledge and skills, identify areas requiring additional learning, and determine the types of learning activities that may address their identified needs. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may incorporate self-assessment, reflective activities, learning discussions, and diagnostic exercises into instructional practices to help learners examine their existing abilities and recognize areas requiring further development. Such activities can encourage learners to become more aware of their individual learning needs and take greater responsibility for addressing them. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, programme coordinators, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from greater awareness of their personal learning requirements, while adult educators may gain useful information for designing learner-centred instructional activities. Programme coordinators and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen approaches that support individualized learning and continuous educational development. The study will recommend that adult education programmes provide regular opportunities for learners to examine their knowledge, skills, and learning challenges through self-assessment and reflective activities. Adult educators should guide learners in identifying areas requiring further learning and encourage them to select appropriate learning activities based on their identified needs. The study will conclude that adult education can strengthen adults’ ability to identify their individual learning needs and support more purposeful and responsive learning.
